How To Grow An Apple Tree From Seed

I grew apple trees in large pots inside my house, for two years, putting them outside during warm weather. ( I live in Tennessee.) Everyday I fed them leftover cool coffee & coffee grounds. They are huge now. My husband and I planted them outside just last Summer and they are still looking good. I think it will be another year or so before they actually have fruit, but I am excited about them. Actually all I did when I planted them was I used the regular seedling soil and I did not cut them as you did, and they grew up nicely.

If you want apples just like the ones you have acquired the seeds from, you must graft a stem from that apple tree onto new root stock. If you just take the seeds directly from the apple and plant them, you may produce apples that are not consistent to that type of apple. All of the seeds will be diverse and not uniform in their product. All varieties of apples, to remain true to their variety, have to be grafted onto rootstock. I do like your hydrogen peroxide technique!

You are correct. Apples are not like most plants, they are not able to pollinate themselves. The types of apples we have in the marketplace are basically clones of each other created by grafting. This is why people that run orchards always plant multiple types of apples and sometimes even plant crab apples on the end of the rows. Any apple grown from a seed while viable will produce a tree that will bear an unknown fruit. it might be a previously unknown variety that will be the next best thing in apples or more likely something less desirable then the parent but it won't be the same. Since you can expect it to take 10 years before the tree is large enough to have fruit and then only if you have a second tree with another type of apple to pollinate with.... Well that's kind of a long time to wait to learn that your apples are sour, hard as rock and subject to worms.

I would assume the apple seedling would be the rootstock and probably when it's two years old, then it can be grafted with a "scion" (cutting off the tree variety desired). :-)

I think these videos- and this isn't the only one- are a real disservice to you tube users. To talk about growing apples from seeds without telling anyone that the chances of ever getting an apple from a tree grown from seed is about 35,000 to 1. The video and even the description make it sound like if you plant a tree from a seed that comes from your favorite apple then you will be growing that apple and will someday get to pick your own from your seed grown tree. I feel so sorry for the average person who may go to all the trouble of buying their favorite apple, getting a seed from that apple to sprout (using your method or any other) and then find a place in their yard where they plant and care for their tree with pride for the next 3-5 years, only to find out it only produces little crab-apple sized, knotty green fruit or disease prone apples that taste awful, or produce nothing at all. How hard would it be to add a single sentence in the description saying "NOTE: If you aren't going to graft a known variety onto your seed-grown seed, it's extremely unlikely you will ever get fruit". Look it up people, this is a waste of time and effort.

Can you do something on PEARS. I have heard they are grafted onto rootstock of another plant. Apples in NZ are attacked by everything but pears are relatively immune to bugs etc. LOVE the lemon series keep up the great channel

You all do know that you can't grow the specific type of apple from the seed of that apple don't you? The apple tree is grafted with the specific type of apple that the grower wants to grow. The tree that the apple is grafted onto is chosen because of its hardiness and resistance to disease. The seeds from a Pink Lady will not grow a Pink Lady apple.

I believe that the apple produced is just some random variety of apple, they can produce any kind of apple, not a specific one. You have to buy the variety of apple tree that you want to grow and it is usually grafted onto another type of apple trees root stock for disease or bug resistance.

Blissful Thinking I've read a lot about growing apples and no you can't grow them from seed. The seed does grow but the tree produces crabapples. My mom planted Apple seeds and didn't get the apples she wanted

That's not necessarily true. Just because it happened once. It's called hybridization. You take pollen from a desired tree and add it to the flower of another. This is how you make new different apples. Take the Sweet Tango for instance, that was just developed about 8 years ago in Minnesota. This was never taken from a grafted limb whatsoever.

I'm not really here to argue though, was just asking questions and you actually proved my point to be true. You could get an entirely new apple from a seed, which means it's a roll of the dice like I mentioned. It could be a bad apple, or a good one, but never an identical apple to the seeds origins because of the way they pollinate. Honesty, you don't need all these chemicals to germinate apples. The way I do it is this: 1. Take a small, low glass- or plastic container 2. Take a tissue or make-up remover pad, put it into the container and drop the seeds on top of them 3. Spray the tissue/pad with water 4. Put transparent plastic foil over the container 5. Put the whole thing in front of a window or outside, depending on the weather/season 6. Tip on the foil every 12 hours or so to make the condensated water rain on the seeds 7. In a few days it will germinate. As soon as the sprout builds roots, put it into soil. 🤷 This works with melonseeds, lemonseeds and bellpepperseeds as well.

this Apple is called Sweet Tango. many have said Gala Apple and looks similar! Many have said Fuji Apple or Royal Gala Apple and even Honey Crisp Apple, McIntosh Apple so really appreciate your comments questions. great guess! Its a Sweet Tango Apple developed from seed in the year 2000 and went to market in 2009. Fuji Apple or Gala has been the most guessed apple so far. Thanks for sharing!!!

It's easy to plant a seed & get a small tree, but it will NOT grow fruit true to whatever apple you got your seeds from, so don't have expectations of starting your own backyard orchard :-) You need cuttings from the original tree to get the same fruit, and unfortunately, all new varieties are protected by patents. The older patents may have expired by now, but you still need a cutting, not a seed.

I agree with what you have written. However if you want to experiment I suggest you take a Macintosh apple for seeds. This is one of a old standard apples that is most likely to produce a good apple. This apple from which many other variety's have been developed from. I had a pleasant experience with a apple tree grown from a seed. Children waiting for the school bus must have been eating a apple and threw the core in some bushes. Many years later there was this small tree growing. I recognized it as a small apple tree. I got rid of the other brush and pruned the small tree. I wasn't thinking of apples because you never know what you get just like Forest Gump. I was thinking of a ornamental tree. I was surprised not only were the apples good but the tree was very productive more than the few apples trees on other parts of the property.

makes sense but quick question? i get if you take the cutting you would have the same fruit ..taking cut will be same as tree you take cutting from, now what about the seeds! will there be one out of 10 that would produce better apples? or will all 10 be bad? just wondering if you can find a better pheno from seed? yes its not like bud and would take years to find one and alot of time! but just wanted to know if its the same ?when im looking for a certain pheno you can plant 100 and have a bunch of them that share qualitys.. but there will be 1 out of 100 that will blow them all away.. but if you pop another 100 you wouldnt find that 1 chances are to low

K. RANTOVICH I did some research after I gave my guess. The apple that fits the description is the SweeTango, not the Honeycrisp. The "mother" of the SweeTango was, however, the Honeycrisp, and was crossed with the Minnewasheta as the "father". So, it's part of the Honeycrisp family, but an offspring

Modified, selective breeding, and GMO's are all different terms to explain the same thing, just some GMO's are made by DNA splicing
