When they say men are to be protectors, this is what they mean. Madison, as strong a young woman as she is, could not defend herself against a knife-wielding assailant. This man, who didn't even know her, acted in braveness to jump to her rescue and risk his own life to save Madison and her mother that day. If not for him, who knows what the outcome may have been. WOW. One of the best victim impact statements I've heard. First, his primary focus is on the trauma done to others before himself...which echoes his heroic actions when he toppled a crazed man with a knife at *full* speed, choosing not to factor in the risk to himself if it meant protecting two women whom he'd never met. Second, his anxiety here is so palpable. Not just during his statement, but also during the Judge's kind words about his heroism at sentencing, and again after sentencing when Madison addressed the press. This man finds it hard to be center of the spotlight. He prefers the credit to go to others. Yet, I keep seeing in my mind how he sprinted across the parking lot at full speed to save a life without hesitation. That is the embodiment of a hero, a soldier, a protector. Humans of that type are often more uncomfortable being in a suit in front of an audience than doing what they do best...jumping into action and constantly scanning for how to be of service to others. Last, he seems to believe in a Christian God. Therefore, I assume he's familiar with the status quo decree to forgive. He doesn't seem personally worried about that here, or at least, he doesn't talk about it. As someone who was raised Christian and believes in the principle of forgiveness...as well as someone who's lost loved ones due to violent murder...I respect the philosophic "value" of forgiving others, but in situations like this when it's deeply personal and you've been handed a life sentence of carrying the trauma, I don't get so worried about going through the social ritual of forgiveness either. I leave that to the priests and the counselors and the people who have less skin in the game. I'm sure the kid will find forgiveness if he looks for it. However, it doesn't need to come from Kennedy, or anyone else who was there that day. Kennedy did his part, and Madison has an incredibly bright future in front of her as a result.
