Love pressing flowers. I started looking at various methods recently and this has reopened my mind. For a long time I have picked/pressed flowers in a small pocket notebook. Then carry the book in a back pocket. Ppl say I press flowers by sitting on them! It works for me. First I loved the art of early 19th C daguerreotypes. Then cdv, ambrotypes. Anyway! A flower a day keeps insanity away. Thank you verily much. John.

That sounds like a wonderful way to press flowers and collect memories as you go. I wish I always had a small notebook to do the same. You’ve inspired me now, so perhaps I’ll pick up the habit! I just read a headline that says enjoying nature can reduce the need for some medications. So yes…a flower a day!

Happy to find your site. I lost my son to war thirteen years ago. Combat fatigue and suicide. Wife died from heartbreak. After trying to drink myself to death I crashed and said God I can’t do it no more. God took me at that moment and gave me flowers. There are no stop signs in the infinite universe. We make the stop signs. Flowers release me. Started at 6:30 one morning with a dream of a very bright blue sky, and a yellow flower opening in full color. Went to the library looked up flowers pressing and picked roadside flowers on way back. Still picking. I call it return fire when fired upon. 77 and going strong. Maybe check my fake book thing. Or google me. Love you ❤️🌸

@FirstDayofHome Жыл бұрын
You’re welcome, Kim! Yes, you can also use a dehydrator. Personally, I might use some caution to avoid drying flowers that might have been exposed to pesticides if you plan to also dry food in the dehydrator. A dehydrator is a great option otherwise.

@user-xe7mz8hh2x I think you can use anything that appeals to you. Cinnamon sticks work well for potpourri if you like that scent. If the mixture loses its scent, you can always add more fragrance oil too.

I really enjoyed your video. Does the ratio of orris root matter in your potpourri recipe?
@FirstDayofHome Жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jane! No, the ratio doesn’t matter too much. It’s just a way to preserve the scent a little longer. Orris root is often used in perfumes as a fixative. You can always add more drops of the fragrance oil if your potpourri loses its scent.

I want to add gardenia petals to potpourri, can I dry them and add them?, thanks Susan
@FirstDayofHome Жыл бұрын
Hi Sue! Yes, you might want to try the silica gel method or just air dry them upside down. (I have some videos that might help if you decide to try that.) I will warn you that white flowers tend to turn yellow after drying. It never hurts to try, though! Good luck!

How do I just make pulpury with just gardenias don't want to add any other sents. Thanks for your help
@FirstDayofHome2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary. You can still follow the same steps. Over time, the scent of the gardenias will fade, but you always have the option to add a gardenia scent later. I think the fragrance oils I linked include a gardenia scent. Good luck!

I dried those in my oven. Can I just spray some rose water only for those
@FirstDayofHome2 жыл бұрын
As long as the rose water is a fine mist, I don't see any issues with that. I like using oils because they don't make the petals too damp.
@penneyjadebeaubrun15484 ай бұрын
I tried this with the whole flowers but for some reason the centers are still very damp and mushy looking. Is it because I just took them out of the oven and they need some time to dry while cooling? Please let me know what to do.
@FirstDayofHome4 ай бұрын
Yes, they may have needed more time in the oven to dry out. You can also hang them to dry or just pop them back in the oven to dehydrate some more, especially if they have thick centers. Good luck!

What's the substitution for orris root powder?
@FirstDayofHome2 жыл бұрын
If you don’t use orris root powder, you’ll want a different fixative to make the smell last longer. You could try benzoin gum powder (amzn.to/3CWWtwG) or cinnamon sticks/powder. Spices like cloves or nutmeg could work too. Another option is just to add more drops of essential oil or fragrance oil once the scent wears off. I hope this helps!

What can I do to prevent my dried flowers from breaking?
@FirstDayofHome2 жыл бұрын
All dried flowers will become slightly brittle, so the best you can do is not handle them and protect them from the sun. You can also make pressed flower art and frame it. Another option is to preserve the flowers in resin. I hope to make a video about that someday soon.
@FirstDayofHome2 жыл бұрын
Oh and another option is spraying them with a fixative like hair spray to help preserve color and structure.

How many minutes do I keep it in the oven for 100 c
@FirstDayofHome2 жыл бұрын
You would bake them for the same amount of time as I did in the video. You’re trying to dry them out at a very low temperature rather than truly “bake” them. 100c is about the same as 200F.

Can arrowroot powder work to fix the smell?
@FirstDayofHome2 жыл бұрын
I’ve heard of arrowroot used as a fixative for making soap, but I’ve never tried it for potpourri. You could always try it on a small batch if you already have some. I imagine it could help absorb any moisture at least.
