This anime is really relatable, and I feel very guilty. I was a bully back in middle school; I bullied a girl who happened to have a crush in me. She's a very talkative kid and has ADHD, and I bullied her for that. Despite this, she still loves to talk with me via phone message and stuff, which makes me so confused. Now I'm 18, and I realize everything I had done wrong. I'm very sad about what I've done. I apologized to her face-to-face on graduation day, even though I wasn't in the same school with her. I apologized, and she forgave me. She said we were just silly kids doing silly things back then, but the feeling of guiltiness is always within me; it's like a scar. Every time I see her on social media or watch this anime, I always remember what I've done. We're now friends, she’s doing good, me and her still talk to each other to this day. I met her mother recently on graduation day, but she didn't bring up the bullying, and I feel like a coward for not having the courage to apologize to her about my behavior. I feel very guilty and remorseful. Now, I've changed and am trying to be a better person. I was a staff on sports day, and whenever I see some kids getting bullied, I love to go to them and talk to them. Anyways, I want people to see my mistake and learn from it. Don't be like my past self. Sincerely,

The saddest part about this story is that Shoya got saddled with the sins of bullying Shoko by his friends when they were just as guilty of it too, and then all of them proceeded to act innocent to the matter, followed by bullying Shoya the same way he bullied Shoko and even years after elementary school they either continued to shun him or acted as if they hadn’t done anything to him, with Naoka in particular acting as if she’s entitled to his friendship and love as if she hadn’t abandoned him and betrayed his trust. They had essentially made it to where Shoya felt like the idea of him being forgiven or even having friends was something he shouldn’t dare to hope for, and honestly if not for the fact that he wanted to repay his mother for the trouble he caused and his desire to apologize to Shoko I wouldn’t be surprised if he had taken his life sooner with how trauma stricken he is, if a simple memory could send him into a panic attack. And even after Shoko herself forgave and befriended him he still felt like he didn’t deserve forgiveness and dedicated his every efforts to make her happy even at the expense of his own life. And knowing all that it makes the ending scene where he finally forgives himself and finally opens up to letting others in again all the more tear jerking 😭
@monkeyroby7 ай бұрын
ikr, Naoko was just this side of unforgivable, I would have preferred if she was not portrayed in such a sympathetic light as the others. I mean, she was the WORST imho. Not even Shimada, who was Ishida's childhood friend, was given that much in terms of a redemption arc - and he and Naoka did basically the same thing, blaming everything on Ishida and throwing him under the bus to clear their conscience (only Shimada had the decency to not act sanctimonious half the movie like Nao). I hated her okay? Too much similar to my own bullies/friends, too close to home xD
@sarahelroub18007 ай бұрын
@@monkeyroby The thing with Naoka is that it’s implied that she had a crush on Shoya from elementary school and when he showed up to her work place after she gave him the card, it gave her the false impression that he wanted to reconnect with her which meant that she had a chance of getting him to reciprocate her feelings, which in turn fueled her entitlement. And once she realized that he only connected with her because he was hoping to get her to reconcile with Shoko it caused her true self to come out, which made Shoya hate her and caused her to target Shoko in the false hope that if she disappeared, she and Shoya could be together. And to be honest I don’t think they actually gave her a redemption arc, if you notice from Shoya’s perspective after he admits he hates her the X appears on her face again and doesn’t vanish until the ending scene, that didn’t happen with anyone else in their friend group even when he had a falling out with them. The most you could say they did for her is that she became open to understanding Shoko by learning sign language, when in the past before she even began to hate her she refused to humor the idea, believing that it was Shoko who had to learn to be like them rather than the other way around.
@YTZSoLo7 ай бұрын
Why is that the saddest part? Shoko ending up with him and never having an example of healthy love is the saddest part. I agree the friends especially the girl should've faced some consequences. But Shoya didn't get "saddled" with anything frankly he got off light asf. He was ripping her hearing aids out and tossing them on top of all the other stuff he was doing one time he rips her hearing aids out so hard she bleeds. In america he would've gone to juvie. In this anime he's worried about loneliness which we all feel as teenagers and he didn't even face a fraction of the isolation and bullying Shoko experienced. Hearing aids aren't cheap he never gives money to Shoko or her parents. It's a total pity party for consequences he caused and in the end he still gets a gf so all is well that ends well ig. Meanwhile Shoko trauma bonds and gets a weak willed suicidal bf never knowing hey im young strong kind gracious and beautiful there are plenty of people that would never even think of ripping my hearing aids out until I bleed I should try dating them. And THAT is the saddest part of this anime the one who needed the most help compassion and understanding (Shoko) is the one who is instead mostly giving it.
