Great to hear this info. Right now I’m having a Glen Breton single malt Canadian whiskey, buy the way its Canada’s first and oldest single malt whiskey and probably entire North America. Made in Cape Breton Nova Scotia. A lot of Scottish immigrants came over to North America ( Canada) area and brought their own traditions over.Hence the province called Nova Scotia meaning New Scotland. Also in Elgin Scotland one of the distillery told us for it to mature and open the barrel it’s three years and one day, to open up the barrel to put in on the market to sell. That’s what I was told by them

great video!! we started a new category, mexican whiskey made from native corn, different than malts or american whiskey we are producing whiskeys made from corn (we have 60 native races in mexico and more than half are in Oaxaca where we produce it) now its slowly becoming a trend however mexican whiskey differentiation is the native corn

My friend. I'd provide an enhanced definition of malt. Malt is when any grain begins to germinate, and goes through a chemical change providing an enzyme that now empowers this grain to carry on two purposes. One it provide the grain taste and two, it now provides same unmalted grain to turn to sugar after being boiled into a mash. Second, Single means, only using one grain, not as you said a distillery. Singe is grain. Malt is a grain germinating. Scotch is where it's distilled and aged. I'm a rookie distiller from Loudoun County, Virginia, USA and am surprised I'm having to pass this on. Your video skills are superb. You might not hear this, but you knocked the production quality out of the park.

Single means single distillery when it comes to the 2009 Scotch whisky act. For example, there is a category "single grain", which MUST have malt barley, but you can have other grains e.g. unmalted barley, wheat etc.

I can see this channel going far, you’re a natural and pace the education well. There’s so much to get into so I’m sure you’re not in need of inspiration but I recently heard a BBC Radio 4 doc which touched on the story of Masataka Taketsuru (bringing whiskey to Japan, marrying his landladies daughter and her basically being the mother of Japanese whisky, the founding of the Suntory and Nikka distilleries). It’s fascinating but there’s not much info out there and I can’t see a biography about him or anything. Obviously there’s tons of history with whisky but I feel the founding of Japanese is recent enough to have decent facts rather than the folklore of Scotttish/Irish. Just a thought - I’m sure you’ve got loads of ideas to get through. Didn’t a NZ whiskey win a world best recently? *Edit* just thought: same whisky from different glasses, different experience? I spent years drinking only from Glencairn thinking it was the “proper” way to do it but now feel that once I know a whisky I actually enjoy it from a wider glass as the nose is less intense. I’ve seen a lot of reviews with pictures of Norlan glasses recently which look great, just got a set and they claim to give a different tasting experience. Used to love ice, now I avoid it for malts but prefer it with bourbon. Obviously everyone’s approach is different so it’s finding the right way for yourself.

Yeah, Thompson Whisky (NZ) won a few awards - really good whisky. They are still young though, but when they release an aged statement whisky - I think it will be unreal. That's a great point about glasses. I'm the same. No ice for malts, but I still have Jameson, lime and ginger ale all the time. Especially right now in NZ, when's it really hot during the day, and it's a good alternative to cold beer. All about time and place I think!

Hi sir, in your video you said that malt means only barley but in US if its 51% still its a malt, so what is 49% in it and if other grains then why it not blended

Really good question and part of why it can be so confusing... It's to do with regulations of each country. Scotland has strict regulations that it has to be 100% barley to be a malt. But in the US (for whisky that is made there), the regulations are different and for some reason 51%+ is considered a malt. And you're right, because technically it is a blend of different grains! For example; 'Woodford Reserve’s Kentucky straight malt whiskey' from the USA is made from 51% malted barley, 47% corn, and 2% rye. I think that's probably a good example. Most of the other 49% will be corn and sometimes a bit of rye too. Hope that helps!

You mentioned in the video that blended means different distilleries and different grains. Maybe I am wrong but I have thought that blended does not mean different grains all the time. If I am not mistaken whiskies can be put into four brief categories: single malt, blended malt, single grain and blended grain. Single malt whisky means one distillery and 100% malt. Blended malt whisky means different distilleries but 100% malt. Single grain whisky means one distillery but different kinds of grains. Blended grain whisky means different distilleries and a blend of different grains. If anybody has a better understanding, feel free to correct me. (I think this does not count in the US because of the 51% limit for all the whiskeys).

Thats a pretty accurate description. Just to throw more complexity in though. It is possible that single grain could in fact be malted barley, but the distillation method prevents it from being called single malt. For example Loch Lomond make a malted barley whisky that is distilled in a coffey (column still) rather than a pot still as required for single malt classification. Due to this is is sold as a single grain whisky.
