Thanks Niall! I’m glad Scotch gets exported here and that I get to explore it. Whereas it’s much harder for me to find good bourbon from the states here. I guess they don’t need to rely on exports as much.

My tip for the sip is swish it for several seconds and swallow half of the sip, letting the rest sit at the tip if your tongue and exhale through your nose lightly before swallowing the rest. You get the taste, the after taste and the smell at the same time.
@FirstPhilWhisky4 жыл бұрын
Whoa that’s fascinating! I need to try that tonight. 🥃
@InWeCome2 жыл бұрын
Yes the smell that comes back when you breathe out is called retronasal olfaction. It can combine with the smell and taste of another sip (or usually the lingering aftertaste) but can also superimpose on it. This is why the aromatic effects of a whisky reveal different notes at different stages of tasting.
@northernninety72 жыл бұрын
@@InWeCome Yeah it definitely smells different when going out than in.

on the nosing wheel, on the Peaty slice under the heading smokey it has tea, kippers, salmon and tar.....what it needs is campfire, BBQ smoke, tire fire, house fire, ashtray, burnt meat, burning plastic...as those are better indicators of smoke smells on Scotch than kippers, salmon, tar and tea.....

Excellent! My wife is a bit of a nosing savant, but the alcohol makes her kind of sick. I still get a kick out of her sniffing my dram before I drink. She can pull out all kind of notes. I will use the wheel to try to keep up with her lol

I like this video because it assures the viewer that the flavor wheel can be used by anyone and that it is ok to pick out notes w/o having to worry if you're pro enough to do so. It is subjective and easy going. Thanks for the education Phil! Cheers! There's got to be a tasting/drinking game that could be made using that wheel somehow😄

Opening the mouth while nosing really helps not trapping the alcohol vapors in your sinuses. So you're not overpowered by the alcohol and can actually notice the other smells more. Try it, the difference is uncanny.

Hey Phil, That was a very cool video. I only started drinking a year ago and i knew nothing about spirits back then. But i liked it alot and i became a Whisky/Whiskey enthusiast... Watching other connoisseurs review Whisky always made me wonder "just how the hell are they able to smell all those flavors when the alcohol is so strong on the nose?" Cos i tried it many times with the Whiskies i have, & i must say im learning. Your video was so cool, Loved it! Thanks for sharing your tips & tricks

Hey Phil really loving your videos, watched all your stuff as I've been really getting into whisky lately. Glad to say you deliver all the right information at the right pace and a great format. I had a question that I thought you might answer or perhaps do a video about in the future. So a lot of people talk about how what you eat/drink prior to tasting a whiskey changes the way you perceive the whisky. Everyone seems to agree on this, but nobody has ever mentioned any form of "palate cleanser" to help between drinking different whiskies or perhaps after a meal. Is there such a thing for whiskey?

Great video. Just getting into whiskey and all I can smell (nose) right now is alcohol. Will get there some day with enough practice. Quick question is whisky is aged in barrels where does the fruity or spicy notes come from.
@trombonegamer143 жыл бұрын
Try adding some water. AFAIK it comes from the wood sugars, and sometimes the barrels are ex port barrels so they had wine in them beforehand

It’s not your broken nose that is causing different sensation. Your left and right nostrils don’t smell the same odors. Not only that, they switch sides periodically. So nosing should involve both nostrils independently and together for a full experience.
