Venezuela Likely the First Nation to Lose All Its Glaciers | Firstpost America
Venezuela has reached a grim milestone in the struggle against climate change. It has likely become the first country to lose all of its glaciers. This comes after climate scientists The International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI) downgraded its Humboldt glacier to an ice field, saying it had become "too small to be classed as a glacier". According to scientists, the glacier has shrunk from 4.5 square kilometres to 0.02 square kilometres, which is equivalent to two football pitches. Researchers say Venezuela lost its last glacier due to abnormally high temperatures. The South American country was once home to six glaciers but lost five of them by 2011.

Indonesia could be the next country in the 21st Century to lose its last glacier. Mount Carstensz, which still has one glacier, is on the Indonesian half of the island of New Guinea, one of the world's largest islands. Many experts say that one remaining Mount Carstensz glacier has no more than 20 years left, due to more frequent incidences of rainfall instead of snowfall.

"Oh, Chinese EVs are so cheap. This is overcapacity and we should deal with it." Really, at least Chinese are trying to reduce carbon particles in air whose deposition on glacier lead to melting and its disappearance.

big deal, now there is more usable land.
@phoque121
@phoque121 12 күн бұрын
Less usable land, because, from time to time, the glacier melts a little (growing back later), and that provides water to local water bodies. No source of water = no agriculture
it takes two to tango 💃🏻🕺🏻
