I am Chinese, work in high-tech (overseas), have a Ph.D., and did work long hours (closer to 70 hours/week) for years when I was starting my career. I definitely DO NOT recommend the same for anyone, let along 120 hours, which is practically a slave. The most I've ever worked a week might be close to 100 hours to get projects finished in the last week. I can very honestly say doubling the amount of hours worked does NOT double the work done. You just switch off, and you get ZERO work done. Everyone needs a healthy balance between work and a normal life. Even the 996 schedule for techies in China is only 72 hours, and I can assure you people there are not 100% productive for that entire time.

Here in India, it is quite normal for IT professionals to work 50-60 hours and even 70 hours depending on the workload. Some CEOs want us to work 70-90 hours but I think they should pay us more in that case. Secondly, the productivity drops when made to work long hours. Luxembourg is at the top when it comes to productivity. How many hours do they work on an average? Here, I think 120 hours is ridiculous. Elon Musk should hire more people and make them work on shift basis if he needs more output.

You miss the point. Not having to commute can easily eliminate 2 hours of unproductive time per day, or around 14 hours per week. When you're trying to reach 120 hours, that's a huge difference. I've worked 120-hour weeks both on-site and remotely, and the difference is enormous. First time was on-site, Manhattan downtown offices, where I had to take the subway and deal with possible delays, transfers, walking around, etc. Later, because of the pandemic, it went remote. I wake up and can literally be working on my computer within 2 minutes, and I can work until just minutes before falling asleep. Commutes can be a massive waste of time.
