Rwanda was given more the $400 million by the former UK government as part of the controversial Migration Deal. The new British government has scrapped the deal, and was hoping to get at least a partial refund. Rwanda has set the record straight. It has no intention to return the British money. The migrant housing it built will be going to Rwandan citizens instead.

Can’t blame Rwanda. The Uk made a stupid deal, but for Rwanda it was a godsend. Literally hundreds of millions of dollars was paid to Rwanda for absolutely nothing (practically no flights and practically no immigrants sent) Rwanda would be foolish to refund it. It’s basically like if you subscribed to a streaming service and agreed to maintain the streaming service for 5 years, never used it and the. Cancelled early. Not their fault you didn’t use it and if it was their fault you never made note of it prior to the cancellation

If I bought a year membership then came in 6 months into it asking for a refund because I never used it it’s 50/50 I’ll get back the remaining 6 months if the year (depending if under contract or not) but I’d never get the 6 months that had already passed. It’s not the gyms job to make sure I go, it’s the gyms job to make sure I have the ability to access the facilities and perform my workout pending machine and weight availability. It was Rwanda’s job to accept any migrants that the Uk flew to them. It was not their job for the UK to make use of the service .

Just a little clarification: The construction works that the UK Home Secretary visited were an expansion wing that would be used to house both Rwandans and Illegal migrants. However, the houses the Home Secretary visited back then were already there even before the UK-Rwanda scheme. Initially, they were constructed as an affordable housing plan put in place by the Rwandan government in collaboration with a construction company specializing in affordable housing called ADHI, and 70% of the houses in that initial plan were sold to the public so just so your audience know those houses were not constructed using UK migration deal money but the expansion plan was though. Secondly, the other sort of apartment building that you showed was there, it was a hotel which was meant to house the first migrants temporarily it wasn't constructed using UK money. Lastly, Rwanda didn't refuse to refund the money because first of all the UK didn't request it and this was a unilateral decision from the UK hence Rwanda held its end of the bargain therefore didn't violate any clauses stipulated in the plan so it's not in any legal obligation to provide any Refund whatsoever. In any financial agreement if one party decides to opt out because of their own reasons the other party isn't obligated to provide any sort of refund if it fulfilled its obligations.

As bad a deal as India buying the INS Vikramaditya from Russian. The Russians basically conned India into takening off Russian''s hands an old (1980s), rusting and unfinished aircraft carrier. India agreed to paid Russia to fit it out and accept purchased from Russia (separately) of some Russian aircraft. Original agreed price was US$800 million but after all the delays and threats from the Russians, it cost India US$3.1 Billion. Originally intended to enter the Indian Navy in 2010-12 but it was not until 2014+. The funny thing is originally, India decided against buying a new carrier because of the cost but still ended up paying the same kind of money on an old second-hand Russian carrier, that was delayed for years and it has already had multiple accidents and fires.

@@shobhaantony3180 The Rwanda scheme started with Priti Patel, she made the first payment and went to Rwanda Then when Suella took over from Priti she carried on with the payments. Sunak kept up the pretence that this scheme would help to discourage the boats from coming. He was obviously very wrong, his stunning defeat in the election echo's this fact. Starmer always said that he would cancel the scheme if elected. That statement went down well with those who believe in open borders. I think Starmer thought that the Rwandans might do the honourable thing and refund the taxpayers money. Shows how stupid he was on this matter

No refund since Rwanda never pulled back from the deal. If U.K. considers the propeety as theirs, then they can bring the propeeties back to U.K . Orherwise, Rwanda can charge them lease. Or, U.K. can cede the properties to Rwanda..

400 million is small change in the UK. It's only 50 million more than the gross weekly contribution to the EU when Britain was a member. This Rwanda scheme was always ridiculous and was always going to be scrapped by a Labour government. Good for Rwanda at least that they got something out of it.
