"Foreign Students Undermining Higher Education" Says UK Home Secretary | Vantage with Palki Sharma
UK home secretary James Cleverly has said international students may be “undermining the integrity and quality of the UK higher education system”. Home secretary calls for visa review over concern that courses are being used as shortcut to gain work permits. This has left universities concerned. Foreign students numbers have already fallen by 33% this year and it could dip more if such statements continue. So why is London targeting foreign students? Palki Sharma tells you.

Tons of foreign students deserve no respect, tons of them are not there for study to begin with, they just want a job and abandon university as soon as they can, I know several example of those.

I had initially planned to retire at 62, work part-time, and save money, but the impact of high prices on various goods and services has significantly disrupted my retirement plan. I'm worried about whether those who experienced the 2008 financial crisis had it easier than I currently am. The volatility of the stock market is a concern as my income has decreased, and I fear that I won't be able to contribute as much as before, potentially jeopardizing my retirement savings.

UK is absolutely right.. Significant number of foreign students, specially from India and Nigeria abusing the student visa system. Many of these so called students abusing the student via route to enter UK, and staying illegally even after their visa expires. UK has every right to ensure only quality and genuine students come to the UK. So the graduate visa is under review to check, what exactly students are doing, after they complete their studies.

I agree with the UK policy of not allowing family members. Students should study, not make babies and try to sponge on. As someone who's lived in the UK for years there's one thing I've observed when it comes to post study here, a majority of foreign students(foreigners) will not get those jobs they are reserved for the brits!!! Sorry Most of you will end up working in restaurants factories the gig economy and if you frugal enough to save up for a hgv licence(5000 pounds) that's the best you'll archive.... Plus you'll need a lawyer to help with your status to get permanent residency which might cost almost 7000 pounds for a five year route.... Please came to the UK knowing all this

Actually he does have valid points. I'm in Canada and we have domestic students turned away because universities get higher tuition from foreign students. That's an issue. Also it's adding to the housing crisis here which is already quite bad. And one of the reasons why some foreign students come over is indeed to use it as an easier way to immigrate, since we have similar benefits, not necessarily because they are actually interested in the course they enrolled in. So I'd agree they need to look at and make changes to the system. We should be doing that here too.

The situation is same in Australia. The solution is asking the full course fee from the students before beginning of the course. And not allowing them to register in colleges if their initial visa was issued upon enrolling for a University course. If they try to register for colleges ditching the University course they got the visa on, then their visa should be cancelled. Solution is there but most politicians don't want to take action.

The assertions made in the report do hold some factual basis, however, the tone and insinuations presented are quite skewed. Let's dissect these claims: Firstly, it is indeed accurate that the UK government has implemented certain restrictions on foreign students, such as hiking visa fees and reducing work visa opportunities. However, it's important to recognize that these measures are within the sovereign rights of the UK government to regulate immigration policies in a manner that best serves their national interests. Concerning the utilization of university courses as a means to obtain work visas, it's not entirely BASELESS to suggest that some individuals may EXPLOIT such opportunities. The Graduate Route Visa was designed to retain talent that contributes to the UK's economy and academic landscape. However, it is imperative to ensure that it's not being misused. Investigations into potential abuse of this visa route are justified and necessary to maintain the integrity of the system. While universities may express concerns about the impact of these policies on enrollment numbers, it's vital to prioritize the quality and intent of education over sheer quantity. Additionally, the notion that these measures are solely targeted at foreign students, particularly INDIAN students, is unfounded. These regulations apply universally to ALL international students. The assertion that Indian students are turning away from the UK due to these measures is also EXAGERRATED. A 4% decrease in applications hardly qualifies as drastic, especially when considering the global context and various factors influencing international student preferences. Moreover, while foreign students do contribute significantly to the UK economy, it's not the sole responsibility of the UK to cater to their needs at the expense of national interests. The primary focus should be on providing quality education to domestic students while maintaining a balanced approach to international student recruitment. In conclusion, while there are valid concerns raised in the report, it's crucial to maintain OBJECTIVITY and refrain from portraying foreign students, particularly Indian students, solely as VICTIMS. The UK government has the right to regulate its immigration policies in a manner that safeguards its national interests while continuing to welcome genuine students who seek to contribute positively to the country.

Nicely articulated... Please refrain from attributing blame to the government. Instead, adopt a mindset geared towards returning to your homeland equipped with the knowledge gleaned from your university degree. Why persist in remaining abroad upon completing your studies? Regrettably, a vast majority of students arrive in the UK under the misconception that they can secure employment and settle here, which is wholly erroneous. Complete your studies, return to your country, and apply the lessons learnt. Should you desire to work, numerous opportunities abound, albeit with requisite adherence to regulations and associated costs. Blaming the government for any misconceptions is unjustified.

The UK should be thankfull for anywone with a higher education, who's coming in and starts working. As a student, you're charged by the university and even if you find a few courses that are affordable, you still have to pay for your stay, which is getting more and more unaffordable due to the UK's failing economy. But it fits into the picture. The UK is taking in migrants and houses them in hotels, but they try to get rid of anyone coming legally as soon as possible. Can anyone please tell the gentleman that students from Europe, who are coming, because their university requires them to study abroad for a short period of time, are affected as well? The UK is becoming more and more entiteled, uninterested in true knowledge exchange. You can't do everything remote. People need to see each other, work and live together and form friendships. Without people young people from other nations, the country drifts further down to mediocrity and provincialism.😢

The truth is that a significant number of international students are using the guise of pursuing education as a means of attaining their real goal: the opportunity of living in a developed country. There's no problem with wanting a better life but being sneaky about it is wrong. That's why such countries should create other immigration programmes that allow people to apply directly to migrate, otherwise they'll keep exploiting the current system. That's not to say there aren't plenty of students who just want to come, learn, maybe get relevant working experience and then go back to their respective countries.

Same thing here in Canada. Our country is circling the drain due to mass immigration from the developing world. The international student visa is one of the ways that our corrupt governments in the West are allowing them to use /abuse the system / slip through the cracks in order to work their way toward permanent residency status / citizenship.

I will always advise foreign students to neglect the UK higher institutions. Most foreign students pay x3 or x4 of the tuition fees than the local students. If foreign students stop attending the UK universities, the local students school fees will increase. They have used foreign students tuitions to make up some aspects in the universities. Post graduate and research studies are filled with foreign students.

The main problem is students hired outsiders to do their assignment for money. Which is really dangerous for the future. Universities should be more careful about those kinds of fraud. Because those students miss using the whole system.

How do you want a new graduate entry level to get a job at 38k and also a sponsorship? they didnt put this 38k rule in the healthcare sector, it’s just despicable. I’m leaving anyway but I understand now why the UK is always referred to as a thief. I find this truly despicable.

Per your own report, foreign student numbers are down by a third. And you said "Take Nigeria for example applications have dropped by 46% this year." So somewhere between 30 and 50% of "students", on realising that they can't use the student visa as a route to work, are not coming to the UK. The UK government, against the express wishes of the electorate, have for decades allowed uncontrolled migration. The people of the UK are angry with their government for doing this, and the government is finally starting to realise that there is this anger. As a result the UK government is trying to fix the problem that they created. The way that they go about this is not necessarily the right or best way, but they are finally addressing the problem. Hopefully they will get the right balance between attracting students to the UK, and not increasing economic migrants.

My parents came to England from Punjab. I can tell you that England is full of highly motivated , intelligent young people that are born in this country. They are now denied opportunities in this country at universities because the universities can make more money giving places to foreign higher fee paying students. Please chose another country for the sake of our uk born children. My house cleaner, gardener, painter decorator, builder, resturant manager, car valet, shop keeper are all on student visas. England can covers all courses with suitable applicants from our uk born cohorts each year. In fact I’m sure we can match the fees foreign born students pay, but unfortunately that option is not open to us because we want a fair society. As a child of immigrants I am fully aware of why you really want to come to the uk and i don’t blame you for it. But foreigners are sold a dream, which unless you have serious financial support, will turn into a nightmare very quickly because the cost of living is very high and it only gets worse every time another person comes from a foreign country to use the resources. The people of England are very accommodating and it is not a racist nation, but it wants value for access to its resources

The Home Secretary is correct. He is reflecting on the public view. If a student has to come to UK, it should not be to get work visa or citizenship but to study and return. If university enrolments decrease, then better that the UK Gov subsidizes them because the benefits (tuitions fees) are nothing compared to the costs: services to migrants such as free primary & secondary education to dependants, health care, housing, etc.; uncounted costs of over-population, increased crime, mental health issues associated with increased cost of living & lack of jobs, etc.

@@Choosepeace-d3l NHS services are free to British Nationals and those who have indefinite leave to remain- Correct. Asylum seekers are housed free of charge-correct However, students aren't asylum seekers and most migrants in the UK aren't asylum seekers. They are in the country through work visas, mostly in health care and other sectors. They get no free health care or housing, and they have to pay upfront as part of their visa application for NHS services they may or may not ever use. It's a hefty amount too. It is there on the gov website for all to see.
