I have a friend who lived in Ghana his whole life, so he had never experienced racism. He had been to Europe before, but he said the first time he experienced racism was in Germany, and it was at the airport on arrival. It wasn't just one person either. I had the same experience. I am an Ethiopian did my PhD in Germany and stayed almost for 5 years in the beautiful Konstanz and returned back home after . I never felt discriminated. I have great German friends in which I consider them as family. My dad was also a German scholar and returned home after his scholarship in the 80's he still have good communication with his old German friends . We have a blessed life in Ethiopia and never felt discriminated in Deutschland !!!

As a Black English man, I have lived in Germany now for a few decades. I came to Germany with the British Army. After I left the Army, I decided to live and work in Germany. In NRW, where I am, the Germans, even the older ones, have not been in any way, shape or form racist. The racism in Germany is usually to be found in the former East Germany. The people there live in a different world in many ways. Till this day, I am very happy I left England, we were and still are behind the Germans in a myriad of ways.

I lived and studied in the east of Germany and I can attest to what you’ve said. Because of my experience there I almost painted the entire German racist. Then because of the racism in the East and because my mental health was really suffering , I changed universities and moved to Berlin. I would say I have the best experience with my new university lab, but I wouldn’t say Berlin is without racism too. Anyways racism in German can be very subtle, but this one time a surly woman who is a shop attendant in a shop me and my fellow African sister was trying to buy hand bags, just outright came out with it, nagging us and not giving us space to choose bags of our choices. I have also experienced just pure stinking looks out of nowhere. After my studies, I’m definitely going back to my beautiful country Namibia, and I have always said that I would not recommend anyone to study especially in East of Germany.

To complete the story, many German politicians face this kind of treatment. One white conservative politician was recently shot for saying Nazis could just leave this country if they don't like it. Our current government is threatened with all sorts of things every day. Furthermore, Diaby was also elected in one of the most racist constituencies; there are few non-Germans in that whole area. So mostly white Germans must have voted for him. He's been in office for a long time and probably has better things to do now. Long story short, there are many bad people in Germany for sure, but a lot of normal people too.

My Uncle in South America bought a Mercedes Benz in Germany in the 80s and he regretted every cent, because that heap of junk began to rust because of Atlantic salt air at the coast, while Toyota and Mazda did not. To be honest I follow German politicis since 2003 and I have never heard nor seen this man on any German news outlet. That's the first time I even hear that we have (or better had) an MP born in Africa.😅 To be fair racism is an increasing problem in Germany like in almost every European country. Democracy is in decline and social spending with it. The austerity politic we are facing benefits the rich but everyone else has stagnating wages at best and living standards in the button 80% are falling drastically. The neoliberal politicians causing this decline using every scapegoat they find to keep themselves in power and stick to their neoliberal agenda. Corona, war in Ukraine, refugees, a slowdown in world trade are just a few of the causes they tell us via media. Conservatives even have the guts recently to tell us that we are not working hard enough anymore and we lack "Fachkräfte" which means high skilled workers in German. They plan to bring the 6 day working week back besides that fact that we currently set multiple labor records. Never has Germanys workforce been bigger, never has we done more overall working hours, never have we done working hours outside of our typicall 40hours work week (82% of them unpaid btw...). Woman participation in the workforce is among the highest in the world and the gender pay gap is small in some states in the south but basically non-existent or even inverted in the east. Some of our companies are among the most profitable in the world (BMW place 38, VW place 40...) And still... a lot of Germans working hard and do run out of money before the month meets its end. Living cost like housing, food, electricity did increase while our wages did not. We got more children starving(!) than ever before besides being one of the richest countries on earth. Why? You ask... Because we are the most unequal country in Europe! We may even be among the most unequal societies on this planet but nobody knows because besides the rich paying laughable taxes our government didn't even provide us any information about the amount of money the rich have. A independ research collective discovered last year that we have at least twice as many billionaires than previously though. Which the richest 100 of them added at least 500 Billion $ to their already huge wealth in less than 2 decades. Of course people are not happy about that.😅 The scapegoat tactics the politicians use to channel that anger away from them and their rich clients lead to more racist behavior. It is like we are living in 1910 or 1930 again.
