For raw beauty, nothing beats this piece. Every romantic film score ever written wants to sound like it.

Somehow, and without realizing it, I found myself closing my eyes and totally concentrated on this outstanding performance...The curious thing was, I was not tired, or sleepy, I was just immersed on it. Thanks.

Great performances of great music have that effect on people with sufficient appreciation for beauty to recognize it. :)

None on earth can beat these fellas, very few can match them: united, with devoted convergence on the music at hand; a daunting blend of mission, with so strong a feel of liberty, discipline, intuition and mutual understanding- impossible without their congregation of the finest musical skills, utter sincerity, to achieve the stunning beauty of their work, above all in reverence and celebration of the composer's creation.

el 1er movimiento es maravilloso melancolico apasionado casi un cuento hablado. los solistas se lucen de la mano deste compositor. la pase estupendo gracias.
Borodin was a rare double genius, chemistry and music. He was also a medical doctor!!

There are a few other recordings (at least two that I have listened to) also by the Borodin quartet playing this, but this is definitely the best recording ever. This will forever remain my favourite piece of Chamber music, and the piece I will always seek comfort in. Pure Beauty and Sublime piece of music.

Fantastic to think that Alexandr Borodin was primarily a research organic chemist 🧪 and music comprised about 40 % of his time.

***** That's a nice way of putting it! Americans always want to turn something into something else, often trivializing it. I'm American, so I can say that.
@marieroth39406 жыл бұрын
We say it often because it affects us by dumbing down our children. I have known many cultured Americans so it is not an American thing it is a popular culture thing.

Actor, Author Gene Wilder mentions this piece which the narrator & main character, Jeremy Webb, plays in "The Woman Who Wouldn't" ~ a beautiful little love story with a fairy tale ending; somewhat, I suppose, as this beloved actor would have had his own life to be. Rest in Peace & Shalom to your soul, fellow earth dweller.

Thanks for uploading this. Borodin had a capacity for composing beautiful, haunting melodies. However, as he was a professor of chemistry and therefore had limited time available, the works often needed to be orchestrated. Was it Rimsky-Korsakov in this case? Does anyone know?
@Pleendriver8 жыл бұрын
Borodin's music was plundered by the people who wrote the musical 'Kismet'.
@strutherhill8 жыл бұрын
Yes, of course, you're absolutely right.
@Pleendriver8 жыл бұрын
There was a parody of the 'musical' at the time on BBC entitled 'Borrowed from Borodin'. Probably by Miur and Norden. It was their level of humour. They insisted on introducing what the BBC considered as too advanced intellectually into their scripts. But, Muir and Norden insisted, many people like to have their knowledge extended. I certainly did.
@peterpickle11878 жыл бұрын
Orchestration isn't very difficult with string quartet, since it is mostly decided based on range instead of instrument color, since the quartet's instruments are all generally considered to share one color palette.

***** LOL
@hyperhavoc58 жыл бұрын
+Ricardo da Mata They are both trying to achieve different things in different harmonic languages. Its pretty unfair to compare the two. Its like comparing Ives to Beethoven. They both are innovators given their surroundings at the time.
@Rickriquinho8 жыл бұрын
Nikit Desai You are just being relativist, which is an easy thing to be. The comparison is mandatory in stylistic analysis. PS Ives is nothing.
@hyperhavoc58 жыл бұрын
+Ricardo da Mata Yes, the comparison is necessary in stylistic analysis, but that's not really relevant. You've basically just dismissed the works of Schoenberg, which is entirely unfair. Borodin and Schoenberg sought vastly different goals in their music, and whether you enjoy the music or not, Schoenberg accomplished his goals, which is worth crediting him with. Comparing them stylistically is obvious. Like comparing a dog and a cat, the features make them obviously distinguishable, but then asking "Why doesn't my cat bark like a dog?" is a pretty unfair question.
@Rickriquinho8 жыл бұрын
Nikit Desai It is totally relevant! You are being manipulative. The fact is that Schoenberg is nothing but a famous name and his works have no value.
