I'm from the south suburbs of Chicago, and grew up on the crispy-edge beauty that is the Schoop's hamburger. I could never figure out why these weren't more popular (but now, fast forward 3 decades, and . . .). As a kid, these burgers paired perfectly with a regional soda called Green River which , for the uninitiated, is like drinking a glass of lime Jell-O, but even sweeter (I think some Schoop's locations even make Green River shakes).

Green Rivers! You can still get them in bottles at specialty candy stores as well as the infamous Jungle Jim’s international market on the north side of Cincinnati.

Yes! Green River is sold at most markets in Chicago around St Patrick's Day. There's a pizza joint around 95th and Cicero that had that stuff on tap! We'd always hit that place up after being at the bar across the street from there. $3 for a huge slice of mostly dough pizza and a small cup for infinite Green River. Good times.

St Louis born and raised, took MANY a weekend trip to Chi-town to watch the Sox. The food there is truly like nowhere else. You missed Hackney's. They have been serving burgers in Chicago for over 76 years. IMO, the best burger in Chicagoland. They have several locations in the Northwest suburbs, but they are so successful, they have one or two in the heart of the city now.

Cheese, pickles and ketchup. Get your ground beef, sprinkle with salt, pepper and onion powder, cook on a charcoal grill, sear each side and finish on the cold side until the burger is medium-rare to medium. That’s how I do it and I’ve never had any complaints with my burgers, I took that same process into my smash burgers and guests gushed over those as well. I enjoy it and sometimes people want pepper jack cheese which adds another layer of flavor. Burgers are my passion when it comes to cooking and I try a new one every week on “burger night” which just so happens to be Friday. Also, that pizza looked disgusting, that isn’t pizza.
