This might be my favorite single piece of content you’ve put out. So cool seeing how the concepts and tactics you’ve been sharing for years in articles and podcast episodes come together in a single day on the water. Seeing them integrated was so helpful. And I hope you can give yourself a pat on the back for the video quality. P.S. - I hope one day I get a dog as calm and well-behaved as River to take on the water with me. He stole the show.

For SURE! The current trend of thin to win, lighter and longer is fine when it works. But if trout aren't eating on the drop and/or up and out of the strike zone, then the majority of your drift is just wasted time, as you wait for the fly to finally get to a depth where fish can eat it. Everything works sometimes.

@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten Ай бұрын
I think that's just the action cam giving that perspective. I was within the Golden Ratio of nymphing, only one rod length over and a couple up, the whole time I was nymphing. Only exception is the one spot up against the rocks, but I mentioned that I didn't expect them to eat because it wasn't a dead drift. Remember, the rest of the footage is dry flies and streamers, and I most definitely fish up and across and at all kinds of angles with those flies. Make sense?

Thoughly enjoyable. Well done. I'm intrigued by a rod that can do everything from casting dry flies to heavy streamers and nymph rigs. What length and weight Ultralite LL is that? It looks primarily like a dry fly rod that can also fish nymphs and streamers. Or is it primarily a nymphing rod that can also cast a regular fly line? It's very versatile and you only need to carry one rod. I could use a rod like that. BTW, River is a great fishing dog!
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten Ай бұрын
Thanks. So there's a lot to this topic of rod selection. I've covered it well in a few other resources, and I'll leave links to those below my short answer. A good four or five weight candle do a lot. The Hardy Ultralite or the Hardy Marksman are great tools, and I wouldn't say they are a dry fly rod or a nymphing rod. They are just good fly rods. Same with the Winston Super 10 or the Orvis H3F. All of those are favorites in a ten foot four weight. Ten feet gives me the reach for tight lining, although it's not necessary. Anything longer becomes a handicap when fishing streamers the way I like to. And the truth is that most any good fly rod will cast a dry fly really well, if you have the right leader (Harvey, for example). So I choose a versatile fly rod, then I build my system around it. Most times, when fishing under the water, I choose a Standard Mono Rig. Not a Micro Mono Rig (specialized), but a tool that casts like a fly line and performs very much that way if my casting is good. That's how I get so much versatility out of one rod. You saw me change at about the halfway point of the video to a dry fly leader. It takes a couple minutes. And that Hardy casts everything beautifully, streamers included, but realize that I'm not also casting the weight of a sinking line or something. Resources: troutbitten.com/2021/09/22/the-best-fly-rods-for-the-mono-rig-and-euro-nymphing-my-favorite-rods/ troutbitten.com/recommended-gear/recommended-gear-fly-rods-and-reels/ troutbitten.com/2022/07/03/podcast-the-versatile-angler-s3-ep15/ troutbitten.com/2017/10/15/fifty-fly-fishing-tips-12-use-a-versatile-and-general-fly-rod/ That should help you out. Hey Dom, quick question...were you using a regular fly line for your rod...not a thin euro line? What I've been doing is carrying an extra reel, rigged up with regular floating line and an appropriate leader for dries/streamers/etc. Then just switching the reel if I want to go from tightlining to more traditional. Great video, beautiful pup! Thanks!
@Troutbitten
@Troutbitten Ай бұрын
Thanks for your question. I have a lot of thoughts about this. Euro lines are useless to me. They were created for competition, to get as close to a Mono Rig and still be within the rules. I don't care at all about competitions, so I don't fall in line with those limitations. Why limit yourself to a euro line? Use a regular fly line on the reel. Then all you have to do is change the leader and not the whole spool. That's about one minute vs five minutes. Make it easier for yourself so you do it more often. Couple articles/video that apply . . . troutbitten.com/2021/01/04/euro-nymphing-fly-line-vs-the-mono-rig/ troutbitten.com/2022/05/05/lightning-fast-leader-changes-with-video/ I tend to do things a little differently than most. But I fish a lot, and I love versatility. Those links should help you out. Have fun out there.

Wow, this is amazing! All I watch on KZbin is fly fishing and motorcycles. This is probably the best fishing video on here. River is an amazing dog! Can't believe how he's trained. You've got to do an article on how you trained him. I have 4 dogs, but I couldn't fish with any of them. All I would get to do is chase dogs! Lol Thanks for sharing your adventures with us. I learned alot too.. Reading only gets me so far I have to see it to truly learn it..

Alright! Thanks very much. Yeah, River is easy. He's the second good fishing dog I've had. Here's an article about my fishing dogs. troutbitten.com/2021/08/11/my-fishing-dogs/ I don't go over a lot of training because I'm no expert. But there's nothing like a good fishing dog.

@Troutbitten awesome! I have registered treeing Feist ( squirrel dogs). Their balance Is unreal, but they are high strung. If a bird flies over, they will chase it! A couple of years ago, I took my mom trout fishing. On the other side of the river was a young black lab that kept pacing back and forth. About that time my Mom hooked a nice Brown, and sure enough, here came that lab! It was trying to steal her fish! She was hollering at the dog and trying to land the fish goingback and forth , I couldn't help for laughing! We finally got in in the net and here came that big wet dog ,shaking and jumping on her! It was so funny... Memories like that are never forgotten. Take good care of River, my friend, and give him a big hug from me. He's so beautiful!
