Ok, while I know the actual translation of the Latin names are stupid and they are tough to pronounce half of the time (at least for me) it is really important to use the Latin when you are talking to other people on the internet about foraging for culinary mushrooms, otherwise someone could die. Also, it helps when people on a bug identification forum are having Facebook fist fights about what a daddy long legs is.
@crimsonrosella20382 жыл бұрын
Definitely! I participate in a lot of insect identification reddits and I ALWAYS include the scientific name. Very important! ^ In inveterates in general there are a lot of species with the same common name, I can think of bold jumping spider as a example. Can’t recall which species but multiple species are considered bold jumping spiders.
@letsplaysvonaja17142 жыл бұрын

It's not taxonomy, but there's a scientist that discovered some receptor or something involved in the brain's sending of electrical signals and named it Pikachurin Then there's a gene related to the expression or non-expression of old dormant genes (like snakes not having old remaining leg related genes expressed) that for whatever reason is named the Sonic the Hedgehog gene. Not even just the Sonic gene. The whole thing, Sonic the Hedgehog gene. No clue why. Seems incredibly random. Pikachurin at least makes sense because electricity and all, but this one just feels like the scientist wanted to name SOMETHING after the Sonic franchise and just couldn't come up with anything so just put the character's whole name on some random gene.
@piaoyun41962 жыл бұрын
I thought it was called sonic hedgehog because it was spiky? And eggman inhibits it :-)

Sonic Headhog has this name because the absence of it on drosophila flies makes the embryo have some sentycules that looks like spikes. There is other 2 Headhog genes, but they were named desert and Indian headhog that are actual headhog species.
