When I was a kid growing up in Gillette, we used to start from Story and ride dirt bikes up to Cloud Peak for some great fishing. Those were the happiest times of my life. So, I always wanted to live in Story.

As someone who lives in Wyoming and close to Story, I’ve been to this hatchery and have watched them spawn the lake trout in the same tranquilizing matter. It’s 100% ethical, they usually get right back to swimming as soon as they’re placed back into the non-drugged water.

If the method is easier than counting, how is it that you can check each individual egg to check for consistency?

I am a former hatchery worker from Michigan. I am not sure I understand your question. Counting eggs and determining fertility are two very different things.

I know it takes all the fun out of it, but I'd try to fertilize the eggs directly into the wild water ways so they have a wild chance from the start. I see all the time theses planters caught like trained lab rats and from what I've experienced here in Cali the planters never do well or grow much they are like live planted targets waiting for the hands that feed them. I think it makes more sense to start them early in the wild not in a tank, not to mention time or money.

Though, why do you intervene in their mating? Fish, must have so called private life too. Let the fish do all joy. Those females will never know, which male sperm fertilised their eggs, so will the male.
