2022 Fish N Paddle Saltwater Slam Tournament. Put a plan together and it worked getting me back on the podium. Few mishaps along the way might have cost me, but did enough things right to place again this year.

Thanks. I found the rhythm early thankfully. The boat placement was definitely challenging though haha.

Thanks for posting the video. I’m new to salt water fishing. I grew up fishing lakes, rivers and ponds. What rod, reel and line would you suggest for catching these 5-20lb fish from a kayak?

Short cop out answer is it really depends. 5-20lb fish is a big range and it really depends on where you are fishing that can swing your set up quite significantly. If you want more of my opinion/experience I'll add lengthier thoughts at the end, but below or some of the typical setups I'd recommend based on types of fishing shown in the video. Live lining - H moderate fast action rod (soft tip keeps baits alive longer). 4000 or 5000 class reel with 30-50 lb braid. Casting (lures) - MH 10-20 lb class rod fast action spinning rod with 20-30 lb test. 3000 or 4000 class reel. THIS IS MY GO TO IF I HAD TO CHOOSE 1 SETUP. Jigging - MH 10-20 lb class rod fast action (preferably casting/baitcasting) with 30 lb test. Tog/Sheepshead/Flounder/Seatrout - Ask if curious. I didn't do much of this in the video so I will skip over this. Trolling can be done by any of these set ups. Light tackle trolling is what I do most often. The rest below is some extra advice/thoughts because I am unsure of your experiences. Please ignore if I am speaking to the choir here. haha. Some other variables and things to think about. Open water I like to stick to a much lighter setup when possible because abrasion is less of a concern. It's more about tiring the fish out so line capacity rules... especially for the larger fish. I do carry a variety of leader ranging from 20 - 50 usually to match types of fish (toothy vs non) and various conditions. When around structure I tend not to go any lower than 30 lb test which is my go to for most conditions. I do like much lighter line, 10 lb/ 15 lb, when fishing for seatrout and flounder because trout have soft mouths and flounder I like to minimize line sag due caused by current as much as possible. Not sure if you kayak fished before or not so I will just say this as well. Your kayak essentially acts like a drag since you are more or less pulled when fighting larger fish. Crazy heavy gear isn't necessary because in many cases it is pointless. You can't crank your drag so high even if your gear allows you to because going any higher, even if setting your drag to the usual ~1/3 of line lb rating, puts you at risk of fish breaking rods or turtling you. Most cases I don't exceed 50 lb test. Sorry again if I bored you or assumed anything, but wanted to be as thorough as possible because vague answers that I got in the past only lead to more questions. Feel free to reach out with any more questions if you have any.
