A true work of art capturing very insightfully the livelihood challenges of Kolis (fishermen community) who were one among the original settlers of Bombay and are struggling today for survival amid waves of modern development and resource losses. Really appreciate the efforts of makers 🙏👍

Beautifully done short documentary with its colorful still shots and smooth scene transitions with seamless J-cuts. Congratulations to the full team of Fish out of Water! ! It makes us aware of another case of gentrification at the behest of “development”. But urbanization and economic progress for all don’t have to be a zero-sum game. We all lose when local sustainable fishing is lost - not just from the supply of fish but from the greater costs of forced migration, unemployment, health and mental issues, crime and much more. With offshore / deep sea farming training, technologies and equipment subsidized by the government and builders, it can be win-win for all.

“We don’t need your development” hits hard. The idea of development being largely understood as urbanisation is problematic. It is crucial to protect our natural ecosystem and communities that are sustainable by themselves, by just letting them be. Good job bringing across the message :)

I think it takes up the cause of the Kolis, fairly well. It is a systematic destruction of the livelihhod and culture of the original inhabitants of islnads of Mumbai. The aspects like Deep sea fishing, private beaches of hotels, bridges, greed of builders/landsharks are commonly known cause. There is another aspect, which is that the cost of maintenance, complinace of new Maritme Rules and fitment of modern navigation equipment also have added to the cost. Further, migrants have flooded these spcaes putting a huge commercail pressure on the trade. Fish has to be sold at lower cost. Adoption of techno;ogy in drying the fish and exporting has to come in to support the community. Jaffrabad in Gujarat is a good example. In the cotext of a fight, I think Gorai and Manori have still held on the land sharks and builders and hope Government allows no construction like bridges in this areas. A sad aspect is the Sion-Koliwada has been almost taken out of the map of Kolis and rub salt in the wound, Koliwada station has been named as Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar, although colloquily many still still call it Koliwada. I have seen these spaces of Kolis dwindle over last 37 years and I fear worse. One more suggestion is that Goverment must engage Life Guards in all the beaches of Mumbai/Thane and they can be all the local Kolis. Right now we can see only one or two life guards and people keep dying on the beaches of Aksa, Madh and Erangal. The number must be increased. You may just see that there are less and less Koli dances in Bollywood. Good job indeed!

Viraj I have worked closely with kolis during marine projects. They are exactly as you have shown, frozen in bounds of their traditions in fishing and social life. Depictions are good.. A small suggestion on the written commentary shots in film, you can give a voice to it to make impact more deeper. Cheers and keep it up

Our island cities aboriginals are the Kolis unlike the political "son of soil" rants. Their localities are far worse managed by the corrupted and zero accountability Bombay Mismanagement Corporation.
