Great update Kev here in the uk so many people are losing fish and expensive koi due to not having enough air in there ponds we have had a heat wave this week 30+ (we’re all moaning it’s to hot) lol but if you have sturgeon they need a lot of air all year round. It’s silly how something so simple can make a massive difference. 👍

G’day Sam. So true. I guess we just take for granted taking in oxygen from the air most people just assume the fish will swim up to the surface and grab some. But not all fish will. As always I appreciate your support 👍

Very nice. The water is so clean. Try using submersible pumps with Venturi aerators. I hate air pumps because they increase maintenance and they are too noisy. Cleaning and changing stones 😅. I did diy some Venturi in the past. Very easy. I am sure you know about them.

Thanks Saeed. I thought I mentioned Venturi they are awesome 👍. I want to try an expandable epdm air diffuser in the dream pond build they are rumoured to be no maintenance and will last a life time. We will see 👍

I believe because the rubber can expand it dislodges and accumulated muck. I haven’t personally tried them yet but I’ll add one to the dream pond to see if they are worth it 👍

@@Ozponds perfect. My heavy equipment arrived and I made a pond less falls with two bubbling rocks. Once i have a KZbin channel ready, I will share with you. Next is a pond with waterfall.

@@Ozponds what variety is the Japanese maple btw Kev?

I’m not really sure. The large one behind the courtyard pond is the most common variety (you’ll find it at every local market as it self seeds readily). The small one that I planted on the left is called “bloodgood”. I have another near the aquascape pond but again not sure as a neighbour gave that one to me.

Thanks mate. The ponds attract loads of different birds. Yesterday there was a kookaburra and I thought he’s probably going to take a fish or two. But they all seemed to be there. We get plenty of frogs, dragonflies and different bees. No big animals like Roos as we are too close to town and surrounded by open farm land. I think it helps that the ponds are all close to the house apart from the pond behind the nursery. The pond down there has loads of ducks. Once I get more established plants I’ll put some of the native Pygmy perch down there. The native fish are all pretty timid and really hide well so they take care of themselves. I’m really surprised I’ve never lost any goldfish though. Those guys are so curious they’ll swim up to a cat.

Hi Kev, the Aquascape aerator is pretty expensive in Aus - have you found other brands suitable for outdoor use? I’m thinking I may add one before summer; my pond has a lot of leaf litter.

G’day Dave. I’m just using one like this in my courtyard pond ebay.us/KmTRYy. You’ll need to keep in under cover though not fully waterproof. Some of the septic models might be suitable. And get yourself a small net, try and scoop out as much leaf debris as you can. Hope that helps 👍 how are your rainbows going? I lost my big male this winter 😞.

@@Ozponds Thanks Kevin. I had looked at a similar model and was worried about it being outside. Might need to get a simple water meter cover and place it over it. Sorry about your Rainbow - no floating fish for me so far - hoping that means they're all alive and not eaten. Every so often I'm putting an old GoPro in their to record what's going on because the Pygmy Perch and Rainbows are so hard to see from the surface. I've put some of the footage online - the times I see the fish well are time stamped in the description. I understand the need for aeration part. But other then winter do I need an aerator (bubbler) or is a fountain filter and a waterfall enough. Assuming it is sized correctly.

Basically if the fish are happy in the middle of summer you shouldn’t need anything else. The water holds less oxygen at high temperatures. Hope that helps 👍

Hey Kev, quick question. The bubbles provide a certain amount of surface area for oxygen. Is that not waaay less than the surface area of the pond exposed to the same air you are pumping with those bubbles?

I’m kinda confused by the question. Bubbles create ripples on the surface which increases the surface area substantially without even taking into account the oxygen that is being directly infused into the water. Bottom line a waterfall or air diffuser greatly increases oxygen exchange. It also allows the oxygen to mix more completely through the entire body of water. I hope that helps 👍

@@Ozponds Sorry didn't mean to confuse you. Maybe English being my second language is causing this, just trying to understand. I come from an Aquarium background and am planning a pond. From my Aquarium background, an aerator does not "infuse oxygen" directly into the water. It provides extra surface area sure, but way less than the surface area of the tank - in this case a pond. Surely if you think about this, it makes sense. The ripples it creates, yes, I can understand and that makes sense. Why would an aerator in a pond "infuse oxygen" whereas in an Aquarium it doesn't? Am I missing something? EDIT: Once gain I feel like my English is the barrier here. let me try and make this simple. Science tells us there are 2 ways that oxygen gets into water through two natural processes: (1) diffusion from the atmosphere and (2) photosynthesis by aquatic plants. Are you saying you found a third way - this infusion thing? Once again. English And EDIT again: This has absolutely nothing to do with the great advice and instruction you have given on your channel - obviously I'm the asshole here. Nothing I have said changes anything about your great channel. Just ignore me and go about your day :)

😂 this is a great comment mate 👍 especially considering English isn’t your first language. I’m always happy to be corrected. I’m not a scientist but if I just look at the water column in a calm area of the pond there is very little air bubbles in the water, if I look near the aerator not only is there the large bubbles but thousands of tiny bubbles. Now it’s my thinking that this is oxygen inside the water hence I say infused… maybe it’s the wrong word but it looks to me that I can physically see the oxygen within the water column. You mentioned science tells you there are 2 “natural” ways to get oxygen into the water, that’s great but I wouldn’t call an aerator “natural”. It’s a man made device which requires electricity. Either way oxygen exchange, agitation, infusion they are just words that I use to try and say oxygen in a pond is important as it helps everything within the pond from the tiny bacteria up to the fish. Like you said just the surface of the water and the plants will bring in oxygen, sometimes it’s enough, sometimes it isn’t. Doesn’t hurt to add more. ✌️

Where is the best place to put aerator disc?

G’day Kim. I believe the bottom is the best place as down there has less oxygen. It will also help stir up debris on the bottom that will hopefully be pulled into skimmers or intakes. If you live somewhere where the water freezes you should the move them up higher so that the very bottom water temperature stays higher. You don’t want to mix the warmer bottom water with the cold top water. I hope that all makes sense and helps you out 👍

If you have a skimmer/ intake you don’t want to position the bubbles so they interfere with the current being pulled in. So generally placing them in areas where your worried about circulation. Which will tend to be more on the edges, I would hope you e got good flow through the middle of the pond. Hope that helps 👍

I need money to survive, the tax department use means to remove my money from my oxygen, the money is then moved into the hands of corrupt politicians where it is distributed among other corrupt politicians, without an adequate amount of money I deteriorate & become stressed, & this stress is a sure path to my premature death, a sure sign that there isn't enough money is when you see me gulping for air at the surface of parliament house. There isn't actually a limit as to how much money I can see present in my wallet, you may have heard of this as financial saturation point. The saturation point is unlimited and accepted like water.

@@Ozponds yes but you will find they are incredibly tolerate. Even when removed for winter they survive in doors. It's why I suggested them. Try out if you can get your hands on the some balansae.
