I used the bolts that is in the puller set. I don't have the outboard right now. My son is using it. I think the holes was a 1/4 20.

I have a 73, I used 1/4 inch 20 thread bolts on my puller to pull the flywheel. You've probably done this by now but I thought others might find it helpful.

The point setup on OMC's is a PITA in that they don't give you an integral assembly you can just fasten to the armature plate. It's definitely an Old School setup.

I needed a trailer for a wave runner and came across this old 80s boat motor and trailer for 450 dollars, it has a 84 25 hp Johnson that dont run, no spark . I got a question theirs a temp thing that has wires running from the coil and the wire is exposed will that stop the coil from firing?
@OmFishing
@OmFishing 6 жыл бұрын
That is a deal of deals. When I was going over the evinrude 6hp fisherman I had the same thing on it the coils was good and the spark plug wire was bad on each end. Check out my videos. Water and electric don't mix. The electrical system is the weak link. Check each part don't assume any thing is good with out checking. As for the wire I am not sure on the model on mine it would not stop it from starting.

how do you line up your coil pack? Is that a special tool or are you just making it even?
@OmFishing
@OmFishing 5 жыл бұрын
I was just making it even. I don't have the special tool. As long as it does not rub the inside of the flywheel and runs the engine I thought it would be ok!!!
@JoeBlowski
@JoeBlowski Жыл бұрын
@@OmFishing The ring shaped alignment tool that many people say is mandatory just shaves a few seconds off the job of aligning coils which would only benefit me if I was doing it multiple times a day. They just need to not overhang the alignment surfaces to clear the flywheel.

I buy most of my parts from Boat Net. I like to call them because if a part is out of stock they will just hold your order and not tell you. I had a hard time getting the OMC points for this motor. I put after market in for the video than went back and changed them. I was surprised of the poor quality of the after market part.

You dont need a puller too take off the fly wheel?..can you get the flywheel off other motors with just a socket?
@OmFishing
@OmFishing 3 жыл бұрын
I have taken the flywheel off by taking the nut off and tap the shaft with something that will not mess up the threads, but I don't like to do it that way. You can cause your self a lot of extra work.

Great work. Did the general inspection turn up the bad points?
@OmFishing
@OmFishing 6 жыл бұрын
When I started inspection the engine for the first time. I did not have any history on this engine. I new the points were bad just by looking at them. I then check the coils and found them to be good. I check the spark plug wire and it was bad on the end where it plugged in to the coil. I cut it off with the idea I would replace it but for now see what else is not working. Check the wire again and it had a bad place where the spark plug connector connects on the other end. I like to replace all parts with OEM. I could not get a set of OEM points at the time. I just left them on back order and yes they came in a few days ago. The points I installed was after market it started and ran but their is not no comparison between the to. So far the motor has been used enough to burn 6 gallons of gas through it and still running great. Still starts easy!

I got a 1965 fisherman with my first boat a few months ago and never tried it out. Built a stand and gave it a few pulls the other day. Fuel was leaking from the pump and no spark. Ordered an old service manual and watched this video to take a look at what I’m up against with the points. If my square style fuel pump is leaky, do you think I can just take it apart, clean it and put it back together or should I just replace it to have a better summer next year?
@OmFishing
@OmFishing 5 жыл бұрын
If the fuel pump does not have any cracks in it. You could just rebuild it, If your not sure about it replace it. I try to spend as little as possible till I see how it is going to run. Then go back and replace the parts that I know are weak. Any motor will run and be a great motor with enough money put in to it.
