Time out... I was there! I made the 5 hour drive up to Upper Red Lake on Sunday the 17 2023 got out on the ice seen how unsafe it was and thought everyone was nuts. I did not even get a line wet got back in my truck and drove 5 hours back home to find this story. So its not just people who weren't there because i was there and the ice was UNSAFE so i got the heck off the lake without ever dropping a line.

What did you see that made you deem the ice unsafe? I'm still trying to learn about reading the ice/winds. I only go out on late ice since I still don't feel comfortable going out on early ice.

7 of us made the same trip up! Got there at noon. Out of Sunny Beach. 10 mph wind out of NW. We fish until 3:30...Wind picked up and we packed up. WE knew with the building wind that we should get off. WHY they didn't on the North side is puzzling!!! I've been fishing Red for 15+ years... THANK GOODNESS I've never had a issue... AND I only fish there early season. Lots of better lakes once the ice castles start coming up...

You all need to relax. This happens ALMOST every year. So take caution. Have your ice picks around your neck , floatation device on your wheeler , and some water wings and you be just fine. 😂.. Talk to resort and bait shop Owners also.

My Buddies and I would take small light boats and paddles on early and late ice. This could have been solved with a call to buddies on shore to bring said boats.

Poor report using just one of the fishermen's perspective. Should have talked with the resort owners on the lake and other fishermen who, like folks who have already commented, saw the potential and either didn't go out or got off before it happened.

Gotta be real dumb to go out early ice on red when it’s that windy. It’s not a question of if it will break apart, it’s when will it… Like watching a buddy in a bad relationship
@raprock500011 ай бұрын
😮 they said there was 10-12 inches of ice, that's plenty safe. The wind is a secondary factor. I mean people build million> dollar homes where hurricanes track that's dumb too but they continue to do it. They don't pay it all everyone else's premiums go up ⬆️
@mengkhang103711 ай бұрын
12" ice he says... I hope that guy measures all his fish with plus 6" on top of the tape. Either way, ice safe is subjective during early season. I remember fishing on 2" of ice and open water within spitting distance. If anyone cares Red is know for first ice bite and just like any sport all have their risks. Nobody got hurt but some pride. Didn't some hockey player die from skates not too long ago, are you gonna call all hockey players morons. Freak accidents happen, relax. Nobody likes a karren.
@rack945811 ай бұрын
This wasn't a freak accident. This is common with early ice next to open water. Many people left when the wind started picking up due to the added dangers.

People are mad because saving you isn't free. Most you guys complain about the government and taxes until this happen then you are suddenly in love with the government. Unfortunately it is mutually exclusive and you don't get it both ways. Hire a company to do this for you, stop relying on the government you hate. Also, since you guys are cheap and poor a-holes, the government will have to continue doing this which will then create the need for regulations. We all know when the government regulates things it ALWAYS goes great..... You should be apologizes profusely to the ice fishing community and make a declaration that you will no longer fish this year.

😂 Don't worry the government wastes plenty of everyone's money. They rob 30% from everyone and they've still got us $33 trillion in the hole. If everyone that had a business ran it like they do the government would consider them bankrupt. 👌🏽
