Thanks for all the positive feedback! I greatly appreciate it! This was a fun build and I'm sure that I'll be making more of these flags to give away as gifts in the future. I've already had quite a few folks e-mailing me or DMing me on Instagram asking for the plans. I've gone ahead and put the links to the SketchUp file I created in the video description. If you don't have SketchUp, you'll find links to a PDF or 2D printable pictures of the template with all the necessary dimensions for you to recreate what I've done. So check the video description for the links! Have fun and thanks again!

Most excellent!! I made a wood flag for my den years ago and used pieces of #1 clear white pine and red cedar for the stripes and the white pine for the union got painted royal blue using oil based paint after 2 coats of white primer. I bought the 50 wooden pre cut stars on line, painted them white, again using oil based primer and paint and glued them in place on the union. I did buy the appropriate size stars to save a lot of effort and made the stripes match the size I needed. Everything was glued to a piece of 3/8” plywood. Some wipe on water based poly (6 coats) and French cleats for the back for hanging finished the project. I like your idea of making it appear waving so I’ll go through it all over and give it to my nephew who is retired army. I’m retired navy (25 years) so his service means a lot to me.

Since giving it to him I have orders for 5 more which of corse I am selling. I haven't had the chance to finish mine yet. I plan on using a mahogany or another red wood for a unburned version painting the union blue and filling the cut out stars white. Again thank you for the video and plans as these are fun to make.

I have now made 4 of these flags. I've sold 2 and donated 2 to local veteran organizations for auctions. They were quite the hit !! On the last one I made I cheated a bit. Instead of carving or painting the stars, I used outdoor vinyl. I drew them in a cad program for the vinyl cutter and cut out enough stars for 7 more flags !! It was very nice and very quick to just peel and press the stars into place. Once the poly is applied they stay in place.

Perhaps once you have the boards cut individually you can then sand them then stain/burn each one prior to glue up. This way you avoid having to tape off.
@FishersShop6 жыл бұрын
I tried that in a previous attempt but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get them to line up perfectly during the glue-up. Doing it the way I did assures for a perfectly smooth surface. It's long and tedious, but it's worth it in my opinion.

🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸It turned out very well! I’ve always wanted to make a ‘waving’ flag out of wood, so I really appreciate the tutorial. I think the only thing I’ll do differently is paint the field dark blue, instead of black. And I might skip the wood burning on one and go with all paint, since I have two chances to get things right. On the other hand, perhaps I’ll make a cutting board for my mother-in-law! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Since I knew I'd be burning the "red" stripes, I didn't want to introduce color to the union. But if I wanted to paint the stripes, then I wouldn't have had to use the foil tape and probably would have saved some time. I sure do like the burned look though. Thanks for watching.

Well done Drew! I like your solution for saving material and getting a second one as a result. It would have taken far less brain power (something important to me!) to just glue up a full butcher block, then carve down to make the ripples.
@FishersShop6 жыл бұрын
Originally that was my plan. But once I started thinking about it, I feared that I wouldn't be consistent and in the end it would look like a wrinkly mess instead of having nice pretty waves. So I started playing around with it in Sketchup and that's when it occurred to me that I could get 2 flags out of one. :) Thanks, Mark!

I love the flag, well done. For the dust issue with the Dremel carving, consider getting the 490 dust blower attachment. It goes onto the end of your Dremel with the carving bit and acts a mini fan blowing away dust. I have got one and it really helps clean up the area you are working in. The 490 attachment is fairly cheap, a few bucks but worth the investment at your local home improvement center. I may attempt your waving flag in the future! Thanks for the video.
