It's so crazy how we can care so deeply about someone who cannot reciprocate. Why do we expect reciprocation? Sometimes loving someone means loving someone and that's it. There's nothing else to it. There's no reward; loving is the reward and that is it. No couple hood, no love letters back and forth, no relationship..just love. Why in the hell does it have to hurt so much to simply love?

I sing along because I feel it too. You’re never alone in that ‘emotional.. place.’ No matter how alone you feel.

Yes, thank you for thinking and speaking it. People who have personal if beautiful perspective shouldn't be dumbed down to their poetic projections, even if they can be respected for it by the happy and/or drunken sort. She got content beyond appearance.

I’m kind of surprised at how many people missed the point of what it’s like to perform a song while being distracted by audience member singing along. It’s only happened to me a few times, and it can get your mind off track… sing my story with your projection at home or wherever, and please! It’s yours there. If I hear you (on or off key), I might miss a moment to change something up, or forget the lyrics, etc. I just watched a live Billie Eilish video w/boygenius. I bet it was great, but the audience sang over them all. I understand the bonding of it - we’ve all done it - but you just watched people move their mouths to your personal sound track and 40K backup singers. That said, I’m 53 and I was lucky enough to see Ani in the early 90s. So good then and now.

She also said "you gotta let me sung this one" ... she was not referring to every song she's ever written. I have been to MANY Ani concerts and people sing along with plenty of songs ... without being scolded. Her newest song "Which Side Are You On" is a sing-a-long for sure.

@francisdenw My reaction to what you and some others are writing is that when I pay a lot of money to see and hear an artist play I really want to hear them and the subtle nuances that they put into that performance and it is more of a courtesy to others in the audience. As a musician who sings from the heart I do agree with her. I do not think it is necesaarily about ego. I just wanted to state a different angle of the situation.

Especially an artist like Ani, who feels her songs and can let them live through phrasing and dynamic changes. The audience singing along is freezing the song in time at the date of recording. Reflexions and growth can lead to new insight and emphasis in these personal stories.

10 years ago someone I loved so much played this for me and said it was about me. It made me feel so guilty for things that were not my fault and I realized somewhere along the line that I am who I am and if I wasn't perfect so what. You create a vision of someone in your head and they dont live up to it oh well. Thats your fault. Your the one that is flawed expecting someone to change. Love people for who they are.I hope you read this someday and know, you'll never be forgiven.

OH LORDY MAY AM I JELLY, I loved this movie so much, so many people hated it because of how it didn't just focus on Ani, how it focused on several different things like RBR's work in Buffalo, the Congress House and Bitch and Animal, but I dug it man.

I find the selfishness of some of these commenters staggering and yet all too predictable. We humans want everything to be about us. We tell our children to be polite and gracious and yet as adults we behave like children. A girl with a guitar and a beautiful voice has provided a space to come together to *listen* and share a good time. We all get out chance to shine. The girl on stage - that's her time. You want to shine - get your own stage. Grow up.

I think she was kind of saying, "Would you go to your favorite movie and recite all the lines?" I can see how the singing along can be distracting for her; say she wants to tweak a line or note...she couldnt if she's being goaded to sing the studio version by a mass of people. Go to a comedy club to heckle!

Chill out? Buddy, I haven't even warmed up yet. And I won't. I refuse to touch base with ignorance in such a way, in way that might make me stoop down to your level. I can't do that to myself, wasting my time trying to change a mind that is not open to openness.

I'm with Ani on this one. Especially the "It pisses off everyone around you" line. I pay to hear and see an artist perform. Not to have a bunch of out of time and off key people on one side, and a bunch of high pitch screamers on the other side. This is particularly important with someone like Ani who changes phrasing, timing and lyrics all the time. The people in the audience are NEVER singing the right thing and are ALWAYS singing it badly.

+Joel Wende I must agree with previous post. This was "published" 2009? This song is from 1992. Ani makes people want more and the music and lyrics are generations of many. I will always sing her songs as with any music I love. Great video. I pay to sing with the fellow musicians on stage and share in the others doing the same around me because we all know the songs.

News: when people relate to her music, it's because it speaks to *them*. They pay for her albums and concerts not because they are thinking about Ani DiFranco and the terrible relationship experience she once had, but because they are thinking about themselves. This seems to bother her. It's mine, she's saying, and mine alone. The point where you get possessive about your own songs is the point you should go back to singing in your bedroom.
