Of the two fish you didn't know, the one on the lower right is a rainbow shiner. They are native to the Cumberland River basin in Tennessee, United States. They don't live in the river down there, but instead live in small, clear streams which connect to the river. Like many fish in our hobby, they are becoming rare in the wild. They aren't too hard to breed in captivity, and are fairly common, especially in the aquarium hobby in Europe. They are a little less common here (Canada), but are even available by mail in the United States. These are fish which like friends, so always get several of them at a time or they will be unhappy. They are an egg laying species, so if you try to breed them, you'll need to keep them over gravel with no other fish in the tank or else they will just be spawning snacks in a convenient package for your other fish and snails. To breed them you should start with them in cool water for several weeks, the gradually warm the water over a period of two or three weeks to mimic springtime water changes. They like a gentle current, and will often shoal up around around the filter outlet.

As someone who owned a hyper aggressive betta that nonstop flared and needed an intervention to CHILL OUT, can confirm that if the betta is flaring that much at the disco decor it should probably be removed. Flaring too much obviously stresses them out, but also if they're like my little idiot they can manage to tear their own gills and create perma injury or death. And for anyone wondering, the betta fish in question passed after living 3 years which I'm convinced was purely on spite. Lil dude hated EVERYTHING and it took a long while to repair the damage to his gills. My man was born full of rage.

Snake keeper here--heating pads are generally accepted as fine (though not ideal) as long as there is sufficient substrate between it and the snake to prevent the temps getting too high. It's heat rocks and heat ropes that are automatic signs of abuse. However, with the lack of visible substrate and the ridiculously small tank that python was in, we do indeed have a snake abuse case.

When my man got his 3d printer a couple years ago, a diffuser for when im pouring water in my tank is the first thing he printed me❤ I would say a 3d printer is one of the best investments one can get for the aquarium hobby. Hands down. Ive printed caves, plant holders for my cuttings so they can root in my tanks, fish hammocks (my big lady gups love them), scoops for removing duck weed, sponge filter bases, a pathway to maximize my hang-on-back filters filter media capacity and flow, countless different filter intakes and outflow nozzles so i can switch up a tanks flow on a whim, floating rings to keep floating plants away from an area so i can sprinkle food in said ring, light risers, screens for my siphon to protect from sucking up fish, frames for moss to grow on, adapters to attatch my siphon to a hose and my hose to my sink (makes water changes SOO easy), and so much more..... literally anything you can think of. The possibilities are endless. Its a $200-$300 investment, but i cant tell you how many times ive had some issue with a filter's intake or something similar that i felt i urgently needed a solution for that the 3d printer has come through and saved the day for me. The only thing is to make sure you're using petg filament or something else that wont break down in the water over time. PLA will break down over time and is no good for aquatic use (despite what a particular reckless austrailian fish-tuber may say....but i digress).

I've got a full sized strainer that i can set in my tank and the handles rest in the rim. I line it with a paper towel as well and it makes water fill ups so easy. My patio pond has a big open space in it that fits the container i use to do water changes and i can just lower it into the water then rotate it and lift it out. A gallon in seconds with minimal water disturbance. Having a good tool or system for not taking to manually control that flow is key to fish keeping if you ask me.

qotw- Team Betta for life! Each one is so beautiful and unique and such a fantastic range of personalities... I just love them so much. It's extremely hot in Texas right now so I have to let my tap water cool down from about 29.4 degrees (85F) and I keep water in those giant jugs like you have in water dispensers. Some of my tanks are right next to tall shelves, so I'll put the jug up there and use my siphone hose to get the new water into the tank. For my smaller tanks, I'll either hold the 5g jug or put it on a paint can so that it slows down the flow. Aaaaaand I have a 3d printed water diffuser (got it on etsy) that helps spread it out enough that guppies and shrimp aren't even moved around. A game changer for sure.

you would be surprised how useful a 3d printer is for the fishkeeping hobby and how quickly it can pay for itself if you have a couple of tanks ... by now I not only print my own filterboxes, pump outlets, tools, glass cover holder, moss grids, plant holders, breeding caves, dividers, light holders, snail traps, feeding clamps/dishes, undergravel filter grids and glass protectors under heavy ahrdscape ... I even designed my own modular covers with perfectly fitting passthroughs, lamp fixture and sliding lid. And even if you dont know how to 3d model, there are plenty of finished models to download and rdy to print available already. And for those who have doubts about the plastics, base color PLA is usually free of toxins and if in doubt just use the foodsafe PETG (just dont use the cheapest filament made in china or freaky Glowinthedark or neon plastics) ... some of my printed stuff is in tanks for years already without any issues.
@FishForThought2 ай бұрын
so cool, i gotta get into it too, any tips?!
@diedampfbrasse982 ай бұрын
@@FishForThought before thinking of getting a printer you might wanna start by surfing the model databases to learn whats available for download already and dont be too upset about all the ugly decoration people come up with, there is enough fancy deco in it too. For me its more about tools, skimmer, replacement parts for pumps/filters, plant anchors/supports or lamp holders, which can be pretty expensive if bought from the usual brands. Try thi_ngi_verse or mak_er_world and look for fish keeping stuff with terms like aquarium/ fish tank etc. to get an idea what other people came up with. If you find interesting objects you could even use one of the many 3d print services to order what you like ... still can be cheaper then whats in the stores, but with a lot of models you wouldnt even find comparable stuff in a regular shop. As for printers: there are already a number of really easy to use ones on the market by now which are fit for beginners. Just stay away from older models, the development still is rapid and the older the printer the more work/learning is required to get decent results. Currently the Bambu Lab A1 mini for around 200 bucks (without the multicolor Addon) would be the typical recommendation for beginners ... have one myself next to others, never had one as easy to use like this and its only noteworthy drawback is the smaller possible volume for objects...

Betta fish.. i know it's the most basic of fish, but i really like giving Betta a "betta" life. the other critters in the current main tank (14ish gallons) are neutral colors, so Scruffy has friends, but they're invisible in most pics (3 pygmy corydoras, mystery snails, 3 zebra danios that wont let me catch them to move them to a longer tank.) We named him that because he was the ugliest fish we'd ever seen when he came home... like a broken thumb... now he's grown up into a beautiful iridescent pearl with splotches of the bluest blues on his body and streaked through his tail. the tank's light is one that cycles through a full day of light types (blue to red in the morning, white most of the day, red to blue at sunset) and when it's blue, Scruffy's tail and fins absolutely glow.
