You know what, they'd probably would end up loving them if they kept some. But thats the same with most fish (except for barbs, those little fin nippers peck everything to death. I had a school of tiger barbs peck a baby red ear slider turtle to death not to long ago. Im never getting any freshwater barbs except for tinfoil barbs ever again).

A tip for people getting into the freshwater aquarium hobby: NEVER, and I mean NEVER get ANY species of barb if you are planning to make a community tank. You are better off with the black neon tetras, the lime green neon tetras, & the glolite tetras than you are with getting barbs. At least neon tetras dont nip your baby turtles to death like how glofish tiger barbs did to mine. Another tip: dont get gravel unless you want unpredictable ammonia spikes, get aquarium sand instead (black aquarium sand looks the best btw, and fish tend to get brighter colors when you have dark substrates). Never start with anything under 20 gallons. the smaller the aquarium, the more maintenance required (you'll be doing it more frequently too). The perfect size to start with are those 40 gallon breeder tanks you can get at PetSmart's & Petco's. Never buy fish from petsmart, those fish dont adjust right and end up dying, or they end up with bad diseases & parasites. Go to non-chain store petshops (if there are none then go to a "Pet Supermarket", if you got none of those then go to a petco, just never buy fish from petsmart.) Dont go for fake plants, they start to deteriorate after a couple of years and end up leaking toxins into the water. Go for live, low maintenance aquatic plants like guppy grass since they absorb excess nutrients and lower nitrate, nitrite, & ammonia levels. Some (like guppy grass) also oxygenate the water unlike a lot of plants too. The fish to start out with are guppies (2 females per male), one or more farlowella catfish (if they have one), some small aquatic snails (NOT rabbit snails, assassin snails, or nerite snails. They all tend to either have very negative habits or are not beginner friendly. The mystery snails found in stores arent made for aquariums either since they get quite big and like to bury themselves as well as move around at night.) and some pygmy corydoras catfish if they have any. Dwarf mexican crawfish & bamboo fan shrimp are good to have too. The farlowella catfish (also know as a twig catfish) is a smallish species of armored catfish that looks like (and is shaped like) a twig. They suck algae off of the glass & plants just like plecos but need a lot of fiber in their diet (again like plecos) which is why you want to give them some driftwood. They are extremely hardy once established, are friendly, are fun to look for since they are masters of camouflage, kinda like a wheres waldo book or a hidden item game. Plus they dont need much room to swim since they dont swim around much, they just shuffle along the glass and substrate, sucking the algae off of things. Pygmy corydoras are a very small species of cory catfish that school and filter the top layer of sand. They may have armored backs but their bottoms are not armored and is prone to infection when scratched/injured. That is why you dont put them in a tank with gravel, only in tanks with a fine substrate like sand. They also are a schooling fish so make sure to get 6 or more. Get mussels or clams, they filter out the fine particles in the water, reducing cloudyness. If you are going for a 20 gallon, then get a 20 gal sponge filter instead of a hob filter. It is safe for baby fish & baby inverts, is the cheapest filter option, runs on an aquarium air pump, is easy to take apart & clean, oxygenates water, and doesn't use much electricity. When selecting an aquarium light, get an LED aquarium light or a planted aquarium light (normally a specialized LED) They dont use as much electricity as normal lights, and they look netter overall. Get a piece of driftwood with an aquatic plant pre-attached; they are cheaper than the dry ones, are already waterlogged, and are already heat-treated. So they can go in right away and will sink to the bottom (a lot of fish like driftwood and some, like plecos & farlowella catfish, require the fiber from it in their diet. The "anubis on driftwood" tends to use a driftwood that has a nice reddish inside, which gets exposed when fish eat the outer fibers. NEVER get a common pleco for an aquarium unless you are getting a 70 gal or larger. Rubberlip plecos & bristlenose plecos can be in tanks 55 gallons or larger, zebra plecos (which are ridiculously expensive) can be in anything 29 gallons or larger. Dont start with male bettas or goldfish. Goldfish are NOT aquarium fish, they are a pond fish. They produce more ammonia than most other fish from the same amount of food. Male bettas are highly aggressive towards other fish, including each other. The only time they "Tolerate" a female betta is when she has eggs ready to be fertilized, they try to kill the female after the mating is done and then will protect the nest until the fry can fend for themselves...... Then they'll try to kill the young bettas afterwards. Get female bettas instead, even though their fins arent all that flashy of a shape, they still have a lot of color. They can be kept in community tanks but need a lot of room to swim despite their smallish size. When taken care of properly, they can easily live up to ten years. If you dont give them sufficient room to swim (they need a minimum of 20 gallons with an added 5 gallons per betta after that. if you want to properly take care of them that is. They are EXTREMELY active top swimmers when in perfect health and the only time they stop is when they are resting. If you are going for personallity, go for small freshwater gobies & small freshwater darters/sand-darters. Even wild ones will recognize you as a food source after a day or two of having them and will hop along the bottom towards you, some can even move their neck independently from their body to look around (seeing them look around almost quizzically can be really adorable to see.) I recommend starting with only the plants & non-burrowing snails at first (starting a culture of california blackworms in the tank is good too since they are a true aquatic worm that eats fallen food out of the substrate, and wiggle their backhave while eating the stuff that has fallen into the substrate, also, pretty much everything eats them and they multiply by splitting themselves in half (which earthworms cant ever do). after all of those have safely adjusted to & colonized the aquarium, start adding some clams/mussels and some micro-shrimps to start (river scuds are good too). Let them colonize the tank for a while until their populations are stable. After all that, you can start adding some fish (do this in small increments so that you dont overload the delicate mini-ecosystem in your aquarium which would effectively, kill everything. )

I had 8 tiger barbs in my community tank along with platys albino Cory cats cardinal tetras and rainbow fish. All lived happily as the Tigers just chased each other and the tank was plenty big enough.200 lts
@McChimkin1233 жыл бұрын
@@tonilynn1597 Every fish has its own individual personality. I was talking about most tiger barbs. Yall just got lucky with the ones yall got, they are know as an "agressive fish" for a reason after all. (I have a pet male largemouth bass that gets scared off by anything that moves. He wont eat live food because they spook him and he has to have his own pond because of this (i have to feed him thawed tilapia). This just goes to show that sometime, albeit rarely, an aggressive species of fish can have docile or skittish individuals. You can also get peaceful fish that belong to a species that is normally aggressive. I used to have a male betta that did well in a community aquarium and left everything else alone. (Male bettas have an aggressive temperament towards ALL other fish. Normally, the only time they will tolerate another fish is when that other fish is a female betta with eggs ready to be fertilized. After the mating is finished, he'll try to kill the female. He'll take care of the young until they can fend for themselves, but he'll kill them after that. But there ARE some peaceful male bettas out there, it's just not normal for them to be peaceful.)
@McChimkin1233 жыл бұрын
@@yellowhamburger7456 Im not sure about denison barbs since they are one of the few species i have never kept. All I know is that Tiger barbs, gold barbs, rosey barbs, tinfoil barbs, and many more are normally severely aggressive. Again, this doesn't mean that there won't be any peaceful individuals out there in some random persons aquarium though, some are hatched abnormally peaceful, like the ones that the commenter named Toni Lynn kept. (If he/she was telling the truth then they just got lucky and got a bunch with abnormal personalities. If they were to be normal, then they'd kill a lot of other fish).
@McChimkin1233 жыл бұрын
@@tonilynn1597 also, if the barbs are "chasing each other" around the tank at high speeds, then that means that the school is too small. When the school is too small, they'll attack each other instead of other fish, if the school is sufficient in numbers, they'll kill if not all, then most of the other fish. Tiger barbs do best in groups of 20+ (as with most barbs) any less will make them uncomfortable and on-edge, causing them to attack each other. But once you get a sufficient amount, they'll just resume normal behavior, which is to kill every moving thing that doesn't look similar to them. Dont forget that in the wild, barbs school in groups made of hundreds of individuals. Same with most species of corydoras catfish, they school in the hundreds as well. Glass catfish school in the thousands, and should be kept in VERY large groups. In the wild, the schools of Otocinclus catfish exceed a few hundred thousand individuals. These guys should be kept in groups of around 50 or more individuals. Even if they say it is "sufficient" to keep 6 of a fish if they school, this doesn't mean that they'll feel safe enough to behave normally if there are only 6 of them. What im saying is that their "True behaviors" wont normally show up unless their schools are large. The bigger the wild school, the more you should keep in the group in your aquarium.) While you SHOULD keep them in large groups, you can still keep them in smaller groups. It is still better for them to be in a large group though
