Out today on a very different river in The Highlands Of Scotland.
The low water and very hot conditions were far from ideal, but were any fish caught?.

We all have our fair share of these. My worst ever was on a small stream in Southland NZ - a tributary of the Mataura River. I hooked and lost 9 fish in a row, not one of them had been under 2lb - most were much bigger. That was in February 2018 and I'm not really over it yet. 😂

@@wildfisher I went to NZ after fishing for years on put and take still waters and realised my river fishing was non-existant, and blanked! I came back and went to learn with an international and now catch a few but most of all realise how much more enjoyable river and wild fish challenge is. I am waiting to get a return bout!

@@kingfisherphil Yeah, the fishing in NZ is very different. I have been lucky enough to have had lots of trips there, but can't see much chance of getting back again with this pandemic.

Another great video Fred and that was a fantastic trout. Clearly you've found a good spot there as my very limited experience of wee streams like this is that they hold a few parr and a few 4 inch trout. You did well to catch anything at all considering the conditions so clearly you are really rockin' this nymphing :-)

We were in the Adirondack Mountains of Upstate New York, fishing on the West Branch of the Ausable River, and encountered much the same conditions: Lower water, higher water temps, and fishing in the morning to avoid stressing the fish. Scenery was absolutely beautiful, though.

Do you attach your dropper directly on your leader above your point fly or is is on a short tag? Hard to tell in your excellent video! I had a similar experience recently by the trout were being terrorized by a loon! Only managed to hook one in an otherwise productive still waters! Tight lines!
@wildfisher

Hi and thanks for the comment. I always tie on a short tag although now and the I tie a dropper off the bend of the hook if using a large dry fly. 👍

Usually a #4 weight for this style of fishing. The rod in the video is a Sage ZXL 9 foot, #4.

Out of interest what’s the reason for the orange indicator
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 жыл бұрын
It's easier for my old eyes to see. 😊 Sometimes I use a big dry fly instead, but the indicator is better with heavy nymphs.
@davidgregg6703
@davidgregg6703 2 жыл бұрын
@@wildfisher I’ve never used one before,,it seems to be a thing that’s causing a lot of debate, I’m not sure if it’s a good idea, would u develop as an angler if your watching the indicator all the time instead of using your instinct to strike , apparently it’s very effective I just don’t see how, reminds me off 20 odd years ago when I started fishing with a bait rod and bubble float, don’t like the thought of a float on a fly rod
@wildfisher
@wildfisher 2 жыл бұрын
@@davidgregg6703 Yeah that's the beauty of fishing. The owners set the rules and the angler is free to operate within them. I know some fly fishers who believe downstream wet fly is little better than poaching! 😂 You just have to decide what suits you and work within the rules of the fishery. 😊
