Fishing BC Presents: Kitimat Salt and Freshwater Fishing

The Kitimat River comes in unison with saltwater near the town of Kitimat and forms an ocean of fishing opportunity. “The thing about Kitimat is its location, right from the headwaters of the Kitimat River to the Douglas Channel” says Tracey John Hittel. Tracey owns Kitimat Lodge, originally moving to Kitimat in his early twenties as a power engineer. Before fishing and engineering, a background in farming shaped his work ethic and dedication to providing an unparalleled experience to his guests.
Tracey attributes much of his knowledge to the generations before him, “you learn from the older people about these special rivers.” Though it is a haven for saltwater fishing, Kitimat does not come up short in freshwater opportunity. In the late-summer, Coho salmon enter the Douglas Channel near Kitimat. Eventually making their way upstream to spawn, this fishery remains productive through the month of October. Along with the Coho enter both Coastal Cutthroat and Dolly Varden in hot pursuit of dropping salmon eggs.

really like fishing up there in BC. Went up there on my sailboat this past summer on Nordic Sun II. those whales are amazing.

Jurassic Park, is right. That's the term I use when referring to the spots my Dad and I had been to. Blessed. I can't wait to move back to B.C.

Hi @FishingBC - Great video! I will soon be visiting Kitimat from South Africa and I am an eager fisherman. What advice would you give with regards to fishing gear I should bring along? I am not experienced in fly fishing...yet, so I would be focusing more on spinning gear - any advice?
