I fished out of 2 sit on top kayaks over a 10 year period ... caught lots of fish, had a blast. This past September (after much research/reading) I bought a Meyers Sportspal 14' canoe. Google it, it's designed specifically for fishing & hunting as one can stand in it and fish - not merely barely standing while teetering side to side, but standing long term and going through the motions of fishing (casting, retrieving, hooksets, etc.) It's ridiculously stable. My Perception SOT kayaks average about 65 lbs each, the 14' Meyers is 58 lbs. It's got a 30 lb thrust electric trolling motor. I made the switch for a couple of reasons ... First, my main pursuit is fishing, not paddling, so motoring around the lake vs paddling is a no brainer. Second is the comfort factor. After 6-8 hours in a kayak, I had to unfold myself to get out and dealt with a kinked lower back for several hours until I got ironed out. Trying to pee took a choreographed routine to pull off successfully as space was at a premium. The ability to stand, sit, kneel, pee, etc. at will in a canoe is a beautiful thing. Lots of room, everything I need in front of me or under the seats. It's a world of difference. In my case a pedal kayak wasn't an option as I have to self load into a full size pickup and they are quite heavy. I'm not knocking kayaks at all, I still have both of mine and have no intention of getting rid of either as my kids like to paddle around for fun. The canoe allows me to cover more water and stay out longer which translates into more fishing. I'm all for more fishing : - D

A lot of people choose the kayak because it's so popular these days, and don't even consider a canoe for fishing. But the canoe is one of the most versatile, time tested boats ever made. I've fished out of sit in kayaks and found sitting in the same position all day uncomfortable. Unhooking the catch in your lap is a wet and messy affair and there is little room for a decent sized tackle box, and forget it if you want to bring a cooler/and or your dog along. And if you want to go camping simply toss a dry bag with your camping gear inside the canoe No trying to stuff everything inside the tiny, not so waterproof hatches. I've also tried sit on top kayaks for fishing. Though stable and providing a little room to move around in, they still don't hold a lot of gear. They are also heavy for their size (some of the popular ones approach 100 lbs) and are somewhat difficult to carry. Your tackle box is behind you and tough to get at and the things are slower than a herd of turtles in peanut butter. They sacrifice a lot of speed for stability. It's also a lot easier to add a trolling motor to a canoe. I've seen it done with kayaks, but with difficulties. There are transom mounts, but heaven help you if you need to clear weeds or a tangled line from your motor. The only advantage of kayaks as I see it is that they aren't as affected by the wind, so on windy days they are easier to handle, but when all things are considered a canoe is a much better all around fishing machine.

I have the ascend fs12t and can hold more than I'd ever need, it weighs 80 pounds and I can haul it by myself. I use a 3 pound anchor with an anchor trolley and can stop wherever I want and not spin around like you would in a canoe if it's windy. Price point is just under $600 and is well worth it seeing as other comparable models are in the thousands. My only complaint is that I can only go alone since it's a one seater and not many of my friends have kayaks. I recently bought a 12 foot canoe for $100 and it came with two paddles. Took it out yesterday and it was great

Kayaks were originally made by "Eskimos" to paddle in the sea. Canoes were made by just about every native culture on the planet and are what were used on all inland waterways. My Algonquian ancestors built canoes in excess of 30' to travel on the Great Lakes.

I really like your simple canoe setup. I find the canoe, with a kayak paddle, more versatile than a kayak. It's funny though, when people see me with a kayak paddle in my canoe, they look at me the same way they did when I rode my Harley with a full-face. Ha!

I have a 10 ft sit on kayak. Its a higher end box store model that I can load alone. My body size is on the plus status. 6ft even 260lbs with a hip replacement , several back surgeries. It gets un comfortable quickly. Seeing this makes me wanna make a new purchase. I didn't hear the dimensions of this craft but it looks as nimble as a yak. For me to get something from behind I gotta paddle to a shallow and stand up in the mud to get what's needed. I'm working on an antique fiberglass 2 person that I cut off square to make a transom to hand a 6 horse Johnson. But this solo has me wanting to trade in the yak.

I have found that I use a Kayak paddle now in the Guide, or with two people in my aluminum canoe. Much easier to paddle/control with the yak paddle. I do think I will add light trolling motor and outriggers before this summer is over. At my age, I appreciate the 36# weight over the 70 of a full sized canoe or most of the Yaks. In open water and with a wind I could see an advantage of the yak with little surface area to catch the wind

I have an Old Town Pack canoe that I use when crabbing. It's light, nimble, versatile and can float merrily along in very shallow water. For ponds, lakes, tidal estuaries and rivers on the quiet side, I'd take the Pack over a kayak because of it's versatility and ease of getting to your stuff. If I were to go out in BIG tidal rivers or venture into the ocean, it'd have to be a specialty kayak.......

I am 66 yoa and have been canoeing since I was in my late teens. My thing is that I am done paddling. I have a 55 pound thrust electric motor mounted on my 18 foot Discovery canoe and I have it set up to go….about 6 feet per second…which is moving out at a very good clip….silently. I love it. The problem is weight. The 18 footer is too heavy. Now, I spotted the Old Town Pack and I think it is perfect for my needs. I photograph and video nature. The problem I see with your Pack canoe for my needs it the location of the seat. I think it is not far enough back to be able to operate an electric motor that is mounted far enough back to actually steer the canoe. I have found that unless that electric motor is as far back as you can get it to the end of the canoe….it will not turn the canoe.
@ericl29698 жыл бұрын
You won't need an electric motor with a solo canoe. You said your trolling motor makes your canoe go 6 feet per second and that you are happy with that speed. That's 4.1 mph. I've been paddling solo canoes for years, miles at a time, and never go slower than that except when deliberately dawdling. If you cheat and use a double-blade paddle like most people do with solo canoes (I myself do not), you'd find it even easier to go at such speed. Plus, you'll save about 100 pounds of weight (battery + motor), and won't need hardware to secure your battery (most people don't bother with that, but it is required by law for every state I've ever checked).

In the past I flipped a canoe in a deep lake it went straight to the bottom. It was so deep we had a very hard time swimming down to attach a rope and struggled to pull it to shore. Kayaks have sealed chambers so it will float. Yes flotation floats can be ,should be used in canoes. To keep it close to the surface.

Hello, I am hoping you will reply as there isn’t much on KZbin about the Old Town Pack, I asked another guy who has a few videos on KZbin a couple questions in a reply but he never replied. I live in the UK and have wanted an Old Town Pack Royalex for over a year and missed out on a few on ebay but finally got one a week ago, hardly been used barely a scratch on it and had to do a 7 hour round trip to collect it. Haven’t got a paddle yet so that’s next, managed to pick up a buoyancy aid from a charity shop for £1 so that will do for that. I have seen people mentioning lowering the seat to give a lower centre of gravity and wondered if that is something you considered? I also sort of decided I wanted a seat like yours with the back rest and use with a kayak paddle and have a single blade traditional paddle as a back up and learn to use as well, I wondered is there a brand name with that seat you have? I see Old Town do a seat a bit like yours that I can get off ebay but it’s over £82.89 plus £25.98 postage to me then probably get charged custom charges, having just looked again at the Old Town seat it does look just like yours. I also wondered about putting the chair with the back on the floor of the canoe maybe raised up a bit to keep out of any water and in front of the webbed seat fastened to it as that would bring centre of gravity down well and the seat more forward as I also think I have seen some say that the seat as it is is a bit far back? Appreciate your thoughts if you can reply. Thanks from Stew in England
@miguelitoring5 жыл бұрын
I don't think I would lower the seat because I like to sit high for fishing. The seat is a little far back but it evens out if you have some weight up front.

Nice Old Town Pack... I have the Angler Edition Pack, but I actually wanted the base model like yours but they were out of stock. Rutabaga sold me a previously test paddled Angler edition at the base model price. Glad to hear you got a good deal on yours, as the Pack is now out of production due to Royalex no longer being produced. I believe they made them for over 30yrs, and yours may be one of the last OT Packs made. Your video has me very interested in the Hummingbird Fishin' Buddy sonars. I already have an old Lowrance iFinder H2oC GPS with Lakemaser chip I bought 8yrs ago, and the depths/weedlines are marked pretty good with that chip. I did not think I needed sonar until watching your video as learning of this unit. How well is your Fishin' Buddy working out for you? And does the mount leave any marks on the Royalex? Also I am on a budget, is it worth the extra cash to go with the 120 or 120c over the less expensive 110? Do you use the side imaging much? My apologies for so many questions, but your video has me searching for info and opinions on these Fishin' Buddy units. I have read they are great for ice fishing too. Thanks for uploading!
@miguelitoring9 жыл бұрын
I really like my sonar. The clamp does leave small bumps in the royalex. I put a small piece of wood on the inside to distribute the pressure better. I don't find the side finder all that helpful. It is best for finding bottom structure and groups of fish on the bottom as well as depth and water temp.
@miguelitoring9 жыл бұрын
Actually since making this video I cut the tube for my sonar about 9 in shorter so it is more compact and drags less in the water. Makes the unit that much better to use.
@WisconsinEric9 жыл бұрын
miguelitoring Thanks for getting back to me and confirming that the side finder feature was not that helpful. Also great tip on cutting the tube 9inches. I am likely going with the less expensive Fishin' Buddy 110 model as my local Dicks has it for only $120. We still have two+ feet of ice on the lakes up here, so I have 5-6weeks to make up my mind.

I am sorry. I must have missed the reason you went with canoe instead of a Kayak?

Terry Smith He said because of the weight of the kayak. He said they're so heavy and he has to load on top of his truck so he'd rather spend the energy and time on the water than loading the heavy kayak.

I am looking at a sit on top vibe 130t because if I want to fish in the ocean it can handle it. The canoe would end up being structure on the bottom of the ocean with me swimming back.

My first time Kayaking and this Kayak held strong. kzbin.infoUgkx4k5UrhC3v_Y4hIEaXLGvHcN5a5aBmZNB The water got pretty rough as a speed boat zipped by me, and the Kayak withstood it (I expected to be capsized). The Ores are very easy to put together, the pump worked beautifully. the seats are a bit hard to sit in after a while (I recommend sitting on the floor). after reading the reviews I was very scared it'd get a hole in it, the material is very strong and durable. The Air valve may need a small Phillips head screwdriver to adjust, other than that, it's well worth the money!(update)I've gone Kayaking in 3 Lakes and 2 rivers totaling about 40 miles. the kayak had two holes and they patched easily and no other problems can't wait for kayaking season this year!

The real reason is because of the saxophone wearing sunglasses. You know the one. Just admit it.
