I switched to small circle hooks for panfishing and honestly can't remember the last time I've had a gut hooked panfish. Great for fishing with my kids as they just need to reel in and the circle hook does the work vs my kid needing to set a J hook.

I also have used big pumpkinseed for bass and the good thing is I could catch multiple bass with each bait as they are much tougher than shiners and they attract more attention when they are injured

There’s nothing more awesome to watch than live bait fishing! I caught my PB Largemouth of 8.24-8.50 LBS a month and a half ago and I think that’s your best bet to catch a fish that size if not bigger! It’s fun to watch the bluegill being chased, and the line running when a bass swallows your bait. Also, I think you should use giant golden wild shiners instead because the bass are a lot more aggressive at shiners than bluegill. Also, you can’t forgot about those spikes on the bluegill. I did catch my PB on a bluegill that was several inches long! 👍

I caught my PB, a 12lb 3oz Largemouth, on a swimbait, in a tournament. Plastics are every bit as good as live bait for bass.

Doing those gills I like throwing by the cover and moving them a bit. Often I will pickup a bass slowing reeling them in from cover. I also use a treble hook bc more hooks helps when they bite down.

Most good rods are way stronger than you’d expect. I charter in saltwater, and Ive seen crazy stuff, including an eight foot tiger shark on St Croix Triumph musky rod (7’ MH) with 50lb braid on an Accurate 2 speed lever drag, with a 2 foot steel leader and a flutter spoon. Palomar knots. We cut the line as soon as we saw it wasn’t a tuna or marlin (we were fishing for striper, but we knew it wasn’t that), but we fought it for about 9 minutes, and cut it loose with about 200’ of line out. Tldr: QUALITY rods are extremely strong, and will power through fish they clearly weren’t designed to catch as long as you use drag effectively.

Hook them at the top basically at the bluegills widest point. This gives the hook the most access but at the same time gives you the chance to set the hook before the hook gets in the throat of the bass. Obviously, you want to avoid that. Don't wait too long to set the hook (tops 4 seconds for big bluegills. Less for smaller). Occasionally throat hooks happens anyways and if so I just cut my line. I think the digestion system of the bass will get rid of the hook safely over time.
@doodlecaboodle9298 Жыл бұрын
You wanna hook near the tail if you wanna minimize a gut hook since bass like to eat bluegill head on due to the spikes
