Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could kzbin.infoUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

because when you reel in a fish or reel in a bunch a moss or snag etc.. the line spooling on has a lot more tension compared to the line being spooled on during the retrieve right up until you hook somethin and it wedges the tighter line into the looser line underneath.. I figured out that if I turn my brake dial all the way up before the next cast and throw it out it doesn’t do that, granted it won’t go as far it performs amaintenance cast basically and just reel it in turn your breaks back to normal quick before the next cast and it’s back to normal.it’s just slows the spool down so it has more time to come unwedged as opposed to when you have it set on lower settings

I fish a lot of straight braid or braid to leader. When the braid knots up like that it's usually because part of it is tighter. Especially when frog fishing it happens because you set the hook hard with the drag locked down and the braid tightens in the spot you set the hook. Not sure if that makes much sense, but it's what I've noticed.

I think it's because a regular spool is pretty deep and when braid has sufficient force applied to it, it digs into the spool and causes the knotting. A shallow spool for flipping and pitching prevents that from happening.

I had braid do that 8 or 10 times to me Saturday when I was throwing a blitz buzzin frog. It agitates me when braid knots up like that in the reel, usually makes me think I backlashed lol

@@blind_eye_fishing could just be your spool tension and brake settings. I remember it happening to me somewhat frequently in the past, but I was also less experienced and using lower quality gear but I gotcha

I spent a couple weeks reintroducing myself to baitcasters this summer due to backlashes 🤷‍♂️ but it wasnt me it was the crazy line I was using then. This reel I'm using is a abu garcia, the line is a decent I'd say mid to better level brand as im a budget fisherman. I was casting 40 to 50 yards easy. Maybe it was the pressure of the larger frogs weight at long distance making it bite into the spool not sure but I know it's a pain lol

I frog fish from the bank at small lakes. My setup is a Shimano Curado casting reel left hand retrieve, 6' 2" St. Croix medium extra fast action. I use Trilene extra tough 14 lb. mono.

You are gonna have a difficult time setting the hook of a frog with a medium light spinning combo...It can be done for sure but you are definitely gonna lose some...Most people use a Heavy action or Med Heavy baitcaster for frogging

Definetly agree with bruce, i only used a spinning rod for a Loooong time but... A baitcaster gives u a lot more flexability and if u catch a big bass in heavy grass u can much easier pull it out

I also agree with Bruce, that rod would be a great crappie rod , but for frogs I wouldn't go any lighter than a medium heavy and probably no lighter than 20 or 30 lb braid
