Hi Sammie,,, boil up the trouts head , clean off all the flesh from the jaws, dry them out for a few days in the sun, then glue them back together,,, shark jaws yeah they look,,, trout jaws,, they are wild looking, when i worked on boats we did all sorts of this stuff to pass time at sea haha,,,,

Did a week on the Swains every year for five years and never saw one dogtooth come in. It's a great place but but nothing like it was half way through last century, old photos from the area show dories filled with a ton or more of trout all in the 5-10kg size or bigger caught trolling over the shallows.

Hey Sammy, doing a swains trip on big cat reality later this year, any tips on numbers of lures to bring? Stickbaits, poppers, fish traps etc. Was thinking around 10 of each, more stickbaits say 15 sinking, 10 floating. What do you recommend? (Or anyone else that's been!) Cheers

Hey mate, it’s a bit of hard question that one sorry. As long as you have a good spread of everything you should be fine. The problem lies if one thing is working and another isn’t you will naturally burn through more of that tackle and not the others. Also if you have a crazy day you can lose a lot of gear! Sounds like you’re on the right track though 👍👍

I went august/September 2021 and we bought home a 20kg bag of fillets each, it's an awesome week away. Yes you take your own rods, tackle etc but the guys do have some gear on board to purchase if you need to restock

That Swains is alive what a top spot, you'd want to keep yer shit together going out there in your sail boat though, especially at night, 400 k's out and there's rocks poking out the water, dangerous spot for yachties, which is about the only way I'll ever get out there

Sammy, you exaggerate somewhat. Even due east of Mackay its only 387 klms. At your claim of 400 you are well outside the Swains.

My apologies Edward. I did exaggerate. It was 388km as the crow flies from where we left port at Burnett Heads in Bundaberg. I simply made the assumption that we burnt the extra 12kms making a few turns along the way to avoid the southern reefs and rounded number up 👍👍

Why is that dumb? I like the challenge of trying to land hard fighting fish in tough conditions. Some people spend $3-6k on a set of golf clubs or a mountain bike, some people spend 100k on a sports car. I buy good quality fishing tackle.
