If you're just starting out, we recommend going with a medium-heavy spinning rod, around 6-7 ft in length. This will give you enough leverage and power to fight larger fish. Look for a spinning reel that can hold 8-12 lb test line, with a smooth drag system and a high gear ratio for faster retrieves. Braided line is a good choice, as it has a small diameter and low stretch, which allows you to feel bites more easily and set the hook quickly. If you're fishing inshore, species like redfish and speckled trout love live bait such as shrimp and mullet, however, depending on the time and place, some types of artificial lures can be effective, such as various soft plastics, jigs, or crankbaits.
