What is a good speed for a kayak to go upto ?
@jasonalmy18722 ай бұрын
Well put. For anyone new to kayaking keep in mind that no matter how stable your kayak is, you can still fall out. So never forget you are in a kayak. Treat it as a kayak and not a boat, try to keep your head from crossing the outside edge, reach forward with your net instead of way out to the side.

I'd gone away from watching you some time ago but your recent content feels much more in line with the content I original came to enjoy from you. Glad to see you back in the saddle, so to speak, and fishing for fishing's sake.

I love the way you explain things so the average person can understand and relate to what you are saying. I had a time learning that it is ok for that initial stability to be a little wobbly as long as the secondary stability sticks. As an older guy relatively new to kayaks, I was concerned about balance while standing. I found that most of that concern disappears with just spending more time standing up. I do however regularly use a balance board to help bolster confidence in standing on a surface that rocks back and forth. Thanks Chad!

Love your vids, bought a SS127 several years ago after owning others with a more rounded wider bottom and had fits casting all day while standing. The Bonafide solved all those issues. I've gone floated/paddled 17 miles in the upper potomac with rapids after smallies,chased snakeheads on MD's rivers, fished the sounds of Avon NC for bull reds and specks and spent 15 hour days casting for musky ripping big heavy rubber baits and I can attest for its stability. Love mine and I feel safe always. Keep the content coming. 8:51

Great video!! Explains stability in a way I can understand! Standability is difficult for some of us for other reason. Too many times the seat is just too low for those who have issues with bad knees, etc. Thank you for helping us understand better.

Chad - thanks for explaining and demonstrating kayak stability in a way I’ve not quite seen or heard before. I’d never quite had the nerve to stand and fish in my OT Autopilot 120 before now. I tried it yesterday afternoon by loading the side and achieving secondary stability as you suggested. This opens up a whole new dimension for me. Thanks for the excellent video.

This makes perfect sense, thanks Chad for the video! It's encouraging to see a fellow big fella maneuver so well in a kayak. I'm new to kayak fishing, and kayaks in general, and I always feel pretty nervous about flipping, but never knew the difference between the two types of stability until now. Hopefully I'm able to be a lot more comfortable the next time out on the water. How would you rate the secondary stability of a Hobie PA 14?
@ChadHooverFishing Жыл бұрын
The Hobie PA is actually one of the best examples of very good initial stability with not that great secondary stability for the size and width of the boat. There are a couple of factors that contribute to that. The PA has one of the highest (and most comfortable) seats on the market and because it has such great initial stability combined with such a high seat, it tends to create a false sense of security for some anglers. That said, I don’t think it necessarily has “poor secondary stability” I just think that because it has such great initial stability and the width doesn’t carry through to the stern, it can lead to some inadvertently exceeding the capabilities of the boat. Hope that makes sense.
@conorschaub3134 Жыл бұрын
@@ChadHooverFishing Oh no, that makes me nervous! After watching your video, I was thinking that my feelings of instability were possibly due to low primary stability, but I have a PA 14, so maybe my concerns are warranted. Nevertheless, thanks for taking the time to reply, and I really enjoy your videos!

Great video. I would say the SS127 has good initial stability but better secondary stability. My kid has a Topwater 120 and that has better initial stability and it’s close in secondary but what I like better is it is much less rickety so I don’t feel like I’m going to lose my balance and go over as I do in my SS127
@ChadHooverFishing Жыл бұрын
The Topwater is a great little boat and you are right about the initial stability and that’s also what makes that kayak much slower. But it’s all about trade offs and what you are comfortable with. When you have greater initial stability is also makes you feel like you have good secondary stability because your boat is already engaged. If I had to guess based on volume and what I know about hull design, I would say that the SS127 probably has 30-35% greater secondary stability than the topwater even though they may “feel” the same or close. That said, the other thing to really consider is does it matter if the Topwater has plenty of secondary stability for your son and how he fishes and if so, then the added comfort you feel when the better initial stability is worth it for him to feel more comfortable on the water.
@shred5 Жыл бұрын
@@ChadHooverFishing I can paddle his topwater at least 5.5mph and probably faster where I can only paddle my SS17 about 4.4mph for a split second, so I'd say the speed isn't too bad.

awesome video sir! i know for me it has a lot to do with the boat, but a lot to do with me as well. i started working with a balance training tool and it made a huge difference in me being confident to stand and fish, throw a cast net or shoot a bow off the kayak. i have a video over on my channel of that board. i'd recommend stability practice to anyone who doesn't trust themselves standing up!

@icebergfishing Жыл бұрын
@thatfishingnoob it's a great kayak, don't regret buying it at all. You can definitely stand comfortably in it but I'm still pretty new to that style of kayak fishing so I stood on it more like a paddle board rather than put weight on one side which feels wobbly but definitely not tippy if that makes sense. You can stand pretty close to the nose as well and still be stable not that I'd fish like that but you'd definitely have to flip on purpose to get wet.
