The larvae of tiger beetles live in burrows in the soil. Each burrow holds a single larva. The larva has a round-shaped head that fits perfectly in the burrow opening. When a prey animal comes along, the larva pops its head up grabs it, takes it into the burrow, and consumes it. The larva have a unique shape that allow them to rest near the burrow entrance for long periods of time. Larvae go through four instars in their burrows, growing larger each time. They are fascinating creatures. In this video, I use a small twig to "fish" for the larva. I only wanted to film it, not catch it.
