I am doing some topwater lure fishing at Everglades, Florida and I am showing different ways I can retrieve and set the hook. It is a long video, so please use the time stamps to skip to the part you want to see.
There are better ways to get the Unis at Everglades but I wanted to have some fun with topwater lures and catch Unique Largemouth Bass, Unique Butterfly Peacock Bass, Unique Florida Gar and Unique Common Snook. Usually I don’t do this type of fishing because it can be frustrating with lots of missed strikes. In competitions it can be even worse and I am not sure why.
01 - Intro
26 - Setups
25 - Straight retrieve. This retrieve gets me smaller fish compared to what I can get if I have 2-dot presentation with the same lure. It is still possible to get some Uniques with bigger lures or x-series lures but it takes time and persistence. See 16:05 and 16:49
25 - Straight retrieve with pumps. This is the one I use the most
47 - kind of Stop&Go retrieve with pumps. I use this one when I have small/short strike zones.
07 - Setting the hook after the fish attacks the lure and sinks it.
37 - Setting lure before fish strikes.
21 - Setting the hook at the same time of the fish strike. Hardest for me to do with smaller fish such as LM Bass and Peacock Bass. Smaller fish like that has faster animation and often doesn’t give much warning and is hard to time it right. With bigger species things are a little easier.
46 - Perfect 3-dot popping presentation with major poppers. Right now this is the only perfect topwater presentation I can achieve at will. Pump(1sec), reel(1sec), pause(1-2secs). Holding the rod at good angle(not too high and not to low) helps to get the 3 dots.
