I watched a video a couple years ago and you can eat the small jacks,the guys that caught them cooked them on a grill if I remember right!

You definitely can eat jacks. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten one. They do tend to have worms but so do most other fish. One day I might do a catch clean and cook on a small jack just to try it. I’m sure they will be good I’ve seen people eat them.

I guess I’m gonna have to give it a try. Next time I’m out I’ll keep a smaller one and clean it and try eating one. I’m going to call you out on that video though so I hope it’s good. Great catches! I agree with you about Jacks, they’re great gamefish but get a lot of undeserved hate from some anglers. I’ve heard people who hate Jacks later tell me that GTs (Giant Trevally) are on their bucket list to go catch one day. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to go catch a GT some day but I have no problem with “GT at home” too

I would love to catch a GT. I watch the CAST KZbin channel and that guy is a beast catching those GTs on the Great Barrier Reef. The biggest jacks I’ve seen here were in fort pierce and they were monsters. Thanks for watching and commenting i really appreciate it.

nice jack that you caught, quick question, you used a white shrimp right? and entered the hook behind the dark spot? thanks

Thank you. I use whatever shrimp they have available at the bait shop some are white some have more of a red tint. I try to hook it as close the the horn in the front of the head as possible depending on hook size. I typically run 1/0 to 2/0 Owner hooks for live shrimp. That dark spot in the shrimp is the brain so you want to go in front or behind it so you don’t kill the shrimp. Sometimes I hook the shrimp in the tail and it will swim away from you and go under mangrove’s and low docks. If I’m going to do a slow retrieve I’ll hook in the head to give a much more realistic swimming action. Another thing is to break the shrimps horn off so it doesn’t block the fishes mouth from the hook. Thanks for watching and replying I hope this helps you out.

I know we checked the next day and saw they were in I probably would’ve kept 2 if I would have known but it’s good to watch them swim away and grow to. They are biting real good in grant but the bite here in Melbourne is slow nothing but jacks and lady fish.

@@centralfloridafisherman9931 im up by edgewater do a bunch of fishing from there down and over by scottsmoor on the irl side. lots of reds and trout around right now were finding them like you were in the deeper drop offs, even if not truly deep any depth deeper then the majority seems to be pretty good right now! Also alota bends in the creeks where the current has washed out the sand or and east to west facing channels or creek systems have been good to for the specks too. Time consuming finding or running hole to hole but when you find them they stacked in super thick ton of 15-19” and a few 23” mixed in the bunch.

What kind of hooks do you use?

I use owner j hooks. I will on occasion use circle hooks all depends on what I’m feeling that day. Sometimes I just like setting the hook. If I’m fishing large baits for snook tarpon and sharks it’s mostly always a circle hook.
