Fishing the Juniata River at Huntingdon Pa. using natural color Nikko Hellgrammites

Bass fishing at Portstown Park in the Juniata River. Caught much more than bass during this adventure. (Bass, Sunfish & Fall fish) Saw several carp and a rather large muskie that managed to elude my camera.
I was using my 5'-5" Ultralight Ugly Stick, Crappy ultralight reel, 6lb monofilament 1/16 oz Jighead and Natural color Nikko Hellgrammites.

If you catch it right, you can pull out a few tanks. The downside is this spot is fished... hard.

My only other suggestion is use as little weight as possible. I use 1/32oz jigs with great success. Happy fishing and good luck 👍

Some days you practically have to hide behind a tree to tie a lure on. That's to make up for the times you couldn't get a hit if your life depended on it.

Nikko hellgrammites do the trick for me. Nothing even comes close in my opinion. Best soft bait for smallies ever made. And those were some big fallfish.

Thanks! I definitely agree. I came across the Nikko hellgrammites watching John on his channel "Creek Fishing Adventures". He had all kinds of success with them so I decided to try them. Glad I did. I've caught more (and larger) bass using them... and I was once a "live bait only" guy.

Was gonna ask where the fall fish were. Always would catch them through that stretch.

I was actually surprised to start catching so many of them with the plastic Nikko Hellgrammite. If I was using real hellgrammites or worms, that would be a different story. Never fished that stretch. I was pleasantly surprised. Thanks for watching!

Were you using a straight retrieve?

In a manner of speaking, yes. The Nikko hellgramites are actually designed to float. Taking that in to account, I was using 6 - 8lb mono and 32oz jigs. I would hook the hellgramite like a minnow. The back floats towards the surface and the jig holds its head to the bottom. In slower water I give it a light pop every so often. In the summer, that little technique is devastating around my neck of the woods. Thanks for watching!
