When specialists say shelter they don't necessarily mean a roof. Depending on the conditions it could mean a cot or hammock- anything to get you off the grounds or something to keep you warm. Again this depends on the conditions. All in all fire is the most important as it can warm you up and/or give you psychological boost.
@charlessalmond7076

Depends on environment.. Water is way more important in a desert environment.

Agree. The issue comes in really inclement weather, when it's heavy winds and horizontal rain. I have been making fires outdoors for forty years in all sorts of conditions and twice I just could not get a fire sustained. That's when it gets dangerous in freezing conditions, without sufficient warm dry shelter and bedding

I feel like shelter is a matter of opinion. Like for me a shelter is at least a roof for rain protection, if I was the add a + I'd like to add walls for wind protection but a roof is all I need😅

Pull the ferro rod towards your hand and downward, to make all the sparks land where you palm it to land, so as not to waste the majority of the action. good luck
@AlexeiArntzen
@AlexeiArntzen Жыл бұрын
The firestarter rod works better if you strike more rapidly. Instead of one strike every five seconds, you need more like five strikes per second. And don't lift up the scraper; just go back and forth really fast to create a shower of sparks. Also, when you first open it, there is a black paint covering over the rod. Scrape that off first and expose the silvery part so that you get more sparks easily.

I've been carrying a little orange fire starter like that for 8 years or so (I wore one out completely and got hundreds of fires). I keep one attached to my knife sheath as a back up to my larger ferro rod and lighter. You've got to practice with them if you are used to big rods, but as for a small affordable rod, I love them. Just check and make sure the carbide tip is ground right before you rely on it!

Ferro is short for ferrocerium rod. Look close and you'll see that the sparking part of the rod is embedded in a larger magnesium rod. Make scrapings of the magnesium part to ignite with the cerro part.

I'm so glad it wasn't windy! Maybe this person should learn how to build a fire! That space blanket placed on a frame on the opposite side of the fire will reflect a fair amount of heat and you won't have to take your clothes (which are your first layer of shelter) off at all! At least he realizes that a disposable lighter is easier to use! Just because Walmart sells it doesn't make it junk!

That's not how you use a mylar blanket. You need it over your clothes. It is not an insulator when you have it directly against your skin cold is still able to pass through the plastic. It works best as a reflecting wall. Or over a lot of clothing.

Or B: get some birch bark, get your knife and scrap the top part until you get dust then spark that. Or C: make a feather stick by making shaving along a stick then lay the ferro rod on the wood facing the feathery part and strike it. Just helping you out since you haven't used one before
