Surya Bonaly (1998) Olympic ice skater who is known for performing backflips on ice is Surya Bonaly-a French figure skater who competed in the 1990s. She was the first female skater to attempt a backflip in competition-the 1998 Winter Olympics, to be exact. By this time, the move had been outlawed by the ISU, so Bonaly received a deduction for performing the forbidden back flip. That said, the Surya Bonaly banned flip was still so impressive that she became well-known for her attempt. What was even more impressive was that she performed this stunt shortly after being severely injured.

When you grow up in a disadvantaged community, it either kills you or it will make you a strong person who achieves amazing things. I am happy for these girls. I am sure they have the mental strength needed to succeed in big competitions. Difficult circumstances build character and perseverance.

Most of black athletes (May be not everybody) have less opportunities because of the neighborhood that they grow up in. It is the point of this news article to highlight that many groups of athletes are succeeding despite their background.

No one ever said that they came from a disadvantaged community. Dawes said that the sport put black people at a disadvantage. The media will lead you to believe that black means disadvantaged, it doesn't. Your statement is valid in that hardships will make or break you but you added the disadvantaged community part because you hear it so much.

@@juliettebynum2241 I understand your argument but the majority of the black community are still behind in many aspects in the US because of inherited disadvantages such as living conditions in high crime areas, having most absentee fathers because of the justice system; low representation in high education and wealth... if we are not blinding ourselves every upward step the black community makes is an achievement that come after hardships and perseverance. Does that mean every girl in this group is from a poor family... not at all, but seeing so many girls getting these new opportunities is a new achievement that wasn't possible for their parents in just one generation earlier.

@@deeprecce9852 HBCUS aren't just for black people. White students can and do attend them often on scholarships because they get minority status. They're historical black colleges and universities not only black colleges and universities. Fun fact they were never segregated unlike most of the predominantly white colleges across America. They actually exist because people of color were barred from attending colleges and schools designated for only white people. Also acknowledging a persons race or culture isn't racism

Firstly i take issue when say a white guy publicly claimed to be proud of joining a group because they are all white! Likewise it shld apply to all races without prejudice. As to the school ethnicity maybe its unique in the states, thus i presume in the name of inclusiveness, Frisk are actively working on having a more balance ethnicity admission programme, like many colleges i know hv quota for minority to balance out the racial disparity at the expense of meritocracy.
