Thanks for sharing. I feel sad this situation was creeated November 10th last year crippling the town severely. I stayed in Grindavik twice, one time for visiting the 2021 Fagardalsfjall eruption and again in 2023 for the Litli Hrutur eruption...

Every time I see or think of Grindavik, I remember the poor, hard-working soul who fell into the hole he was trying to fill and did not come back. Is that spot marked in any way as a reminder and a memorial? I would travel from the USA to visit and pay my respects.

The crack or multiple cracks were in Grindavik on the 1957 Town Map but houses need to be built, they could have built around the crack which they mostly did for private housing but Government gave them planning for new builds in 2022 so much compensation is due to all.

I wonder if Gridavik could be relocated to a safer and suitable part of the coast. I mean move the buildings and anything else that can be made portable. I've seen people move whole houses here in the U.S. It is a lot to move, but I would bet Iceland could get some financial and practical help from around the world. It would be nice to save something BEFORE it gets swept away.

That would be a novel idea, rebuild it as a Town beneath the sea. The Town is sinking. The harbour is an actual fissure that lets the water roll in. I believe some minor repairs may be possible but saving the whole Town will not be possible and logically maybe should be considered not safe as the fissures are volcanic and no scientist seems able to predict with a hundred per cent certainty where the next lava fountain eruption will occure. But on the bight side there is always other locations.

Yo, I think them ancient vikings had the right idea back in the day, primarily relying on their ships, exploring the world, living with the changing seasons and literal land changes. What remains of them as a culture is not found on Iceland, I've always wondered on this. I think permanent settlement on these lands is just extremely risky... and with how expensive we make life out to be for ourselves.... i just feel sad seeing Grindavik man. It's never gonna be stable for this type of city planning.

The closest I came to anything like this was the 89 earthquake while living in the San Francisco Bay area. It is rough. In some ways less bad (except for certain locations), in some ways worse (people died). But the same shock and helplessness in the face of planet earth at work. 😢

I don't think that area is safe at all, with all those holes and cracks in the ground. Would not want to raise children there any more: the chance of one falling in is just too big. So many hopes and dreams ruined by this event. What got me though is that crack straight through the middle of what Google Maps says is a Viking temple. I don't know if it really is an archaeological site or just some tourist trap thing, but the alignment is pretty darn accurate.
