Boy, you are incredible! Your video is soo good and your effort is so consistent. Besides the well thought approach, which is incredible, your cleverness and compasion are of admiration because this video will help people like me, with insomnia, choose a device that is easy to wear and accurate, to some extent, as you presented. The data is useful when taking some medicine, to see the effect as well as predicting how many hours we have to sleep to compensate the lack of sleep from the night. So yes, the data is helpful in improving the sleep. Thank you for you existance! 🤗🙏❤

Thanks for providing such high quality data! So in summary, FitBit was 73% accurate at correctly identifying the 4 sleep stages. Of the 27% that it misidentified, the vast majority (25%) was during the following cases: light sleep misinterpreted as deep sleep (9.2%); deep sleep misinterpreted as light sleep (2.1%); REM sleep misinterpreted as light sleep (3.9%); light sleep misinterpreted as REM sleep (6%); and light sleep misinterpreted as awake (3.8%)

Thank you so much for doing this video. I am currently suffering with sleep related issues and after 2 sleep studies I just don't fall into any of the "normal" categories. My sleep specialist suggested having a sleep tracker might help with a bit more insight, altho not 100% accurate, but to be used as a guide for regular information. The only part of my current fitness tracker that doesn't record my data is the sleep tracker... So at least you have shown me it is worthwhile for me to purchase a fitbit! I'm currently booked in for my third sleep study and have no idea how u slept attached to those wires for an entire year!! But thank you for doing so!
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Sian, Thanks for your comment! I think a sleep tracker might indeed be useful. Though keep in mind that these trackers are being developed to track (more or less) "normal" sleep patterns. The fact that trackers like the FitBit use actigraphy (so basically your movement) and heart rate means they are inherently limited. If you really want to track your sleep well, an EEG monitor that records brain waves is indeed best. However those wires are a nuisance indeed! At the moment I used this device: hypnodynecorp.com/ , for my daily tracking. It is a small EEG monitor with 4 electrodes. this could be something to consider (though I am unsure about the pricetag). I have no affiliations with this company, but I (or my colleagues) need to run some analysis to say more about the accuracy of the device. All the best with your sleep issues. Hopefully you'll get plenty of restful nights! And, stay safe with regards to the current Corona situation!

Love your videos! I have had a Fitbit for years but just recently got serious with tracking my sleep. I was so curious how accurate it was. I’m completely ok with the 73% accuracy for 2 reasons. 1. There is no way I am ever going to obtain or wear a proper monitor like you had, and 2. I am only using this to improve my sleep . And I have! I notice the nights I eat right before bed my sleep is MUCH worse! I’ve also noticed I have better sleep when I walk at night. This is a totally fun experiment! I am now making sure I drink enough water, turn off my screen at least 1/2 hour before bed (aiming for 1 hour) not eating 4 hours before sleep, and trying some breathing/meditation before I sleep. I’m like a kid at Christmas not being able to wait to see what my sleep analytics look like and tweaking things and keeping a journal to see how much I can optimize sleep. Sleep is a pillar in the health of our bodies and brains so any way we can improve it is a plus for me!

Your videos are incredible, they put other KZbin videos to shame. One piece of feedback: The first-line treatment for insomnia is CBT-I, and a key principle in CBT-I is to restrict your time in bed. You don't want to spend significantly more time in bed than you spend sleeping, because then the bed becomes a cue for wakefulness. I noticed that in this video and the previous one, you suggest spending more time in bed. It might be worth reconsidering the wording there since spending too much time in bed seems to be a common pitfall of insomniacs, and insomnia is such a pervasive problem? Thank you for sharing this world-class content.

@@TheQuantifiedScientist thanks for that Rob 😊 This Q. has come over in past as well, and thought may be I could share here and ask you. It's completely fine if you are not an expert or don't have inputs. I have noticed and found that during a physical activity or even in a non physical activity (doing strenous office work / research study), sometimes or often stress gets developed in the head and I have noticed that when you pour normal water (of normal temperature) over your head or body, the individual feels a little relaxed and better. But what I found much more intriguing is the fact when one uses ice cold water post over your head or body post such an activity (due to which stress arose), the individual feels at bliss and much more calmed down compared to the case when normal water was used. I exactly don't know if stress has to do something with head / body temperature and whether ice cold water is really a gd solution. This also reminds me of the fact that why some athletes use ice cubes to heal up their injuries faster, but don't know relation with that of brain activity - if it ice cold water affects brain activity in any way or does it help one to work better.
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 4 жыл бұрын
@@unkown.heisenberg Hi Jabru, interesting question! This is not my field of expertise, but I'd be happy to speculate. My first thought is that cold water is much more of a "shock" to the body than lukewarm water. It might be that the shock of the cold water forces you back into the moment, and to feel your body again, instead of being lost in the stressful situation. The moment of cold is of course followed by the comfort of warming up again, which might feel nice as well. Using ice for recovery of muscles I suspect of unrelated, but again, I am just speculating. If you have some kind of injury, ice can help reduce inflammation and swelling, and additionally athletes indeed use ice-baths for general recovery after strenuous workouts, though I don't know the science behind this. This is just my random collection of thoughts, and I'd be happy to hear yours! Have a great day!

I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea. In using a CPAP it has brought a lot of improvements to my health. Adding a Fitbit Charge 3 with sleep tracking/rating it gives me a guideline to follow. My doctor agrees it is not 100%, but much better than not having any feedback. It has allowed me to see the advantage of various approaches and what their impact is - such as: regular bedtime, cutting down on blue light/screen time before going to bed, etc. It is not to be used to give a clinical view, but it definitely gives you feedback that is useful.

Very interesting and very thorough, great job! I would like to ask your thoughts on your sleep test results from the EEG as compared to the "typical" ranges you mentioned. For example, your EEG had your awake stage at 1%, whereas you quoted typical around 10%. Similarly, your light sleep stage is typically in the 60% plus range whereas the typical number was 50%. So are your EEG results more typical or more unique due to your own personal physiology? Just comparing notes with you, definitely not overly critiquing you. Thank you.

It would be interesting to see what proportion of the "extra" awake times are 90s... Thanks again!

Hi Sunny, the Fitbit Charge 2 does not support this, but the Charge 4 should support this I think. I have never tried it though, so I cannot say if it works. I could actually check my data: for the last 3 years I have been recording how tired and happy I felt waking up. I could see if this correlates with my final sleep stage! Thanks for the idea :-)

The Quantified Scientist that’s great to hear. I’m pretty worried about my sleep and i’m recently trying out a samsung watch active 2 and it registers a lot less deep sleep than the fitbit did. That seems more consistent with how bad I feel usually when I wake up. Seems more accurate so far... but who knows :( I look forward to more of your work!

@@francescob.3019 Hope I can help! Sorry to hear about your sleep problems, hopefully they'll improve over time! I may have suggestions but I don't think they matter: one should mostly meet the algorithm rules and users taste. As far as I cant tell, something fundamental is: speed and cuts, camera (which you have) and lights/colors. But I think all of this is extremely difficult and you already deserve more! The duck is from 2011 so it's all a different world 😂

Did you also record audio and video data? Seeing that the Fitbit could be registering various other readings and using those readings to alter the readings for whatever reason it seems to make sense? Such as tossing and turning, body temp, decibel levels could be sensitive in sleep state. Snoring? Or oxygen levels. Just throwing my opinion on it. Great job and diligent effort.

Hi Matthew, thanks for your ideas! I have video data for some of the nights, but not all. This is something I need to look into, but haven't done yet. I tried wearing a "normal" SpO2/oxygen monitor, but that wasn't comfortable. I did wear a FitBit Charge 3 many of the nights, which should have recorded SpO2 levels at the wrist from what I understand. I do have decibel levels as well and environmental temperature. Would indeed be cool to look at all of these! Thanks for the ideas and you compliment, really appreciate it :-)

Smartwatch vs Science: How accurate is your sleep tracker? I'd recommend changing the title to this instead. It's more appealing and mantains the information short and sweet. Also, spot-on presentation my friend. Constant eye contact and smiling. Pretty welcoming =)

Thanks for your comment, these things really help! I'll look into changing the title this weekend! You're definitely right! However, I think the FitBit Charge 4 is releasing now, so it might be good to keep the words FitBit in there, so people can actually find the video. Thanks for the compliment, and it seems you're doing better than me on your channel, so good luck to you too! Enjoy the weekend, and stay healthy
@cheddargt
@cheddargt 4 жыл бұрын
@@TheQuantifiedScientist yeah, I've been researching for a college project and it seems the charge 4 is about to get hot right now =) I think you don't need to actually keep the word "fitbit" in your title for it to pop up in search results. Your thumbnail, description and tags probably have fitbit all over them already. What I did to make sure people found my video was including multiple search alternatives in my description (i. e. fitbit charge 4, fitbit 4, fitbit charge 4 sleep, fitbit 4 sleep tracker), and it did the trick I think. Your video has a lot of potential to be "blessed" by the recommendation algorithm, which is why I think the title I suggested could get you more views: everyone knows what a smartwatch is, but maybe not everyone knows what a FitBit is (I just heard about it for the first time yesterday, it seems to be more popular in the US). Maybe informations like the smartwatch brand, "ONE YEAR TEST" (yes, all caps haha), a miniature of that 5:17 comparison or a miniature EEG graph could fit well in the thumbnail to compliment the title, these things don't necessarily have to be in the title to attract viewers, but are a solid way of creating interest and showing what type of content to expect inside the video. I don't have a lot of experience with running a channel, but I do have a lot of experience with "what piqued my interest" and "what made me click" on a video. I used that experience once to make a decent tutorial on a subject no one had done before but that's pretty much it haha Either way, your content's great. Big respect for your notes in the description too, that's some solid information. I'm not much of a youtuber myself, I just pay attention to things I look forward to in a video and sometimes, when needed, I'll apply that to one of my own :P Stay safe and stay healthy! Have a nice weekend too :)

I have trouble waking up and keeping my sleep rhythm. I wanted to use "smart alarm" feature. So I bought Hauwei Band 4 Pro, that has this "Harvard Medical School Certified", TruSleep tracking. It detects the length of my sleep correctly, but it turns out, that the "smart alarm" can only work without this TruSleep extended data turned on. Also it doesn't seem to work correctly after two weeks of testing. Considering that you have experience with Fitbit trackers, do you think their "Smart Alarm" feature is useful and working as intended?
@TheQuantifiedScientist
@TheQuantifiedScientist 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Johann! I think if it were accurate it could be useful. However, I think the devices are not accurate enough in most cases to reliably wake you up in the correct stage. I think it will work quite often, but it will also get it wrong sometimes. For me personally, I'd rather sleep 10 minutes more, and be woken up in the "wrong" stage a bit more often, instead of using the smart feature. In the morning we will not have any deep sleep anyway, so it is just a matter of REM vs light sleep. If you feel that this makes a big difference for you, than this feature might be helpful, though it will get it wrong sometimes :-). Just my thoughts, hope it helped in some minor way ;-). Have a great day!

Not all but alot of the fit bits are single line ekg monitors, they cant tell you if your having a heart attack but they can keep simple readings. Also your fitbit its checking movement for restlessness unlike the eeg which is just checking brain waves and not body movement why it may say your awake or sleep stages my be off.
