Same. I consider myself pretty body positive and as close to fully recovered from an eating disorder as I can be, but the edited photos still bring back that shame about my body, and seeing the “real” pictures is incredibly validating/reassuring. And that worries me, because I don’t WANT stranger’s fictional bodies to have that power over my body image. But it does show the importance of posting real bodies online. I try to share my relaxed stomach, cellulite, and awkward leg angles, along with posed gym pictures, on my Instagram, and it’s actually really helpful somehow to go back and look at my own side-by-side posts, and accept that the same body can look vastly different from second to second, not to mention over time, before vs after eating or lifting and getting a pump, etc. But then you get all this backlash from the fat positive community that “we don’t need to see ‘skinny’ rolls” / “if you can hide your fat in clothes you don’t experience any negative conditioning from society” and that’s such BS. We DESPERATELY need to see all kinds of varied, normal bodies in media

I wish she would've also mentioned surgery. It's not just editing that makes the Kardashians look that way. It's lipo & numerous fat transfers from thighs/ back/ tummy to rump, cool sculpting, tons of kybella, botox & filler injections, etc. I've seen Kardashians in person at a few charity events (Kim & Kourtney, back when Kim was Paris's asst) & anyone will tell you they weren't considered beautiful among NY's social class. They were bottom heavy. Now after lots of surgery, editing & careful crafting of their image to make bottom heavy the popular thing, they're supposedly goddesses on social media. It's pretty funny tbh.

I wouldn't nessecary say it's not true or possible. Having abs and a defined body is possible and they are real, although even those bodies don't look perfectly in shape all the time. People bloat and so on. However these influencers who photoshop their body to look like they're constantly working out and watching their diet are lying. Not only because they don't do that and they don't have that body but because they will advertise tea, pills, waist trainers and what not and say that this helped them get the body they don't even have in reality.

It is a psychological problem and partially contributes to many other problems.More men are struggling with this now because of new standards getting harsher but this has been a problem for many years for women. Also, women being critical of women comes from a person internalizing the unrealistic standard and both becoming disgusted by those who don’t fit the mood as well as projecting their own self disgust on others for not fitting the mood. The biggest problem is that these people are making money off of the message they are sending that their bodies are achievable and something to strive for. Meanwhile their viewers are seeing this and potentially paying in attempt to achieve this. Also they’re potentially developing disordered eating or feeling less about themselves since they are not reaching these body goals. When the reality is that they achieved that body through photoshop. Seems like a scam to me.

I know I have a similar body type to some of the real bodies in this vid and hearing her saying they look beautiful and their bodies are beautiful like that was reassuring, if she were to shame and bash them I’d probably feel a lot different after watching her vids. Edit: just wanted to add that while I stand by what I said it does not mean these influencers shouldn’t be called out for editing their bodies and creating insecurities in others, just that her vid wasn’t aimed at these influencers, it was aimed at the women and girls their content makes feel less worthy or beautiful so it makes sense to talk the way she does.

In some instances, this whole fake “social media life” can be really damaging to some people who believe it. I had a friend who had a rough go at life. I won’t get into details but she was just dealt one shitty hand after the next. I remember having a conversation with her where she basically told me how sad she was when she looked at her friends social media pages because they all were married, or were having families, going on vacations, looked skinny and pretty, and they all looked so happy.. and that she wanted that. I remember telling her that most people will only post what they want you to see, photos can be faked, and that no ones life is as perfect as they make it seem on social media. Even though she generally agreed, I knew she still had that thought of “I wish I had that”. In March of 2020 she committed suicide. I’m not saying she did it solely based on what she saw on social media, but I think it was just another blow to her already destroyed confidence.

They didn’t create the problem. Even in the 90s without Instagram, models would show up for their magazine shoots and find out the editor of the magazine pretty much retouched every aspect of them. I don’t want to throw patriarchy and male gaze in this but a lot of the standards have been developed separately from the models. And only recently based on the jlos and kim ks of the world, every woman that wants to “make it” in that world has probably realized that they need to edit themselves to fit this “new” standard. It’s a mess and I feel bad for them and the young people who follow them. This is why what Stephanie is doing is so beneficial for everyday people while not ruining anyone’s life because everyone is going through their own struggles.

Definitely doing it for the money. One of the influencers said when she posts a normal looking picture it doesn't get even 10% of the likes and comments of a heavily photoshopped perfect looking one. As long as the masses demand the 'perfect' pictures, there will be influencers posting them, it's a vicious circle. But where does the line go? Are we also liars if we were make up? Or color our hair?
@theresaalbert3915
@theresaalbert3915 3 жыл бұрын
I personally think the line goes where people are lying. When they say they achieved for example a certain look completely naturally when it is clearly impossible to do so. It is especially bad when those influencers sell stuff which they claim helped them get there when it is a scam, be it home workout plans for a super shredded shape in just 2 weeks, detox tea for clear skin, anti-cellulite cream, needle-rollers for full lips, ... the list goes on. I don't care if it is about hair-dye, make-up, workout plans, diet, money or whatever. As soon as somebody isn't honest anymore, I am done. But I also realise that the masses demand such perfect pictures because they show what "normal" (what it is that anyway) people dream about while at the same time it makes them feel better about themselves when the pretty facade crumbles.
@RhiReviews
@RhiReviews 3 жыл бұрын
I think the line is that you don’t actually look like that in person/real life - ie: I can colour my hair and put makeup on, and if people see me in person, then that is exactly what they’re seeing. Versus if I say have brown hair, brown eyes, narrow hips (in person/real life) but I’m editing my pictures online to display blonde hair, blue eyes, big curvy hips etc… then it’s just fake, because it doesn’t represent what I actually look like should you meet me face to face! If these influencers are changing their appearance to the point that they almost look like a whole different person should you actually meet them face to face, then it is clearly going too far.. I mean you could almost argue that they are creating false identities really, because the photos don’t match up with the reality.

These women are all beautiful and inspire me, if I had to focus on the barbie dolls, I know mentally that would have such a terrible impact on me. What I don‘t like about this whole „they are victims of society‘s standards“ is: to an extend they shaped these standards or at least they keep them relevent. I know that we can‘t expect everyone to be so confident in themselves to just share „normal“ poctures of them but as you John said they need to be held responsible. By them changing their body and looks artificially they keep these unhealthy standards alive and I think to an extend they know that but they keep doing it because it brings them money.

I commented this earlier but it seems to have been deleted for whatever reason, so I'll say it again: The reason Stephanie is being so overly nice about this and making 10 disclaimers for every piece of criticism here is that in current internet culture, women can't criticize or say anything bad about other women without automatically getting written off as being bitchy, jealous, toxic, anti-feminist, and all kinds of things like that. The current climate dictates that modern, progressive women should only ever lift each other up, and never turn on each other, since you know like... it's the patriarchy that is the real enemy and all that shit. Women just aren't allowed to be firm or blunt or confrontational with each other. I agree these influencers need to be held accountable, like you're saying, and that the editing is shady, but please understand that gender plays a role in how you can go about calling others out lol.

It doesn’t matter that she’s a woman, anyone being blunt would’ve been called out for calling a woman “bigger” or anything remotely close to “fatter.” Patriarchy isn’t the problem lol, stop acting like it’s a boogeyman for all of society’s problems. The problem in this particular instance is the fat acceptance movement who will not tolerate anyone criticizing people for stuff like this. Also, why should only “modern, progressive” women only lift each other up? What makes a woman “modern”-do women who choose to stay at home not fit this weird standard you made up? I’m bit trying to be sarcastic, I’m genuinely confused by people like you who say these things and then don’t bother defining them. Are other women not worthy enough for you because they don’t have your beliefs?
@999Claymore
@999Claymore 3 жыл бұрын
You just contradicted your point. You say the patriarchy is the problem but also said that women are the ones pushing each other down for what they say or labeling each other as being “anti-feminist” for voicing their own opinions. I used to work in construction and now I’m a nurse and now 90+% of my coworkers are women, so I’ve gotten plenty of exposure to the differences in behavior of both the sexes, and I don’t think the causes are due to the “patriarchy”. When I worked with men they were much more upfront and honest about how they felt about another person. They could work together civilly and get the job done, but they didn’t put on a fake mask and pretend to like a person that they didn’t. Working with women on the other hand, I’ve witnessed so much fakeness and backstabbing. So many times I’ve seen two women act like best friends when they are in the same room, but the moment one leaves the room the other would then proceed to talk so much shit behind her back. I think this is because women on average are naturally more agreeable then men and avoid conflict when face to face with the other person. In today’s world with so much interaction taking place through the internet, women now can more easily trash other women due to being able to hide behind a screen and not having to directly face the person they are attacking. And keep in mind this is also taking place in a time where feminism and “female empowerment” is mainstream and has never been stronger. So I think we need to start actually looking at the actual biological differences and causes of behavior rather than taking the easy way out and blaming everything on the “patriarchy”.

I've watched many of Stephanie's videos and I love how she is exposing these influencers. I have wanted to say something to her about being too positive, but haven't. I agree that it's not about body shaming but calling these people out for being liars. I'm actually pretty disgusted by the shit on social media and I'd fully support all filters and editing apps being done away with forever!

I’m an older woman (41) - so was lucky enough to grow up without social media. It was hard enough then just seeing unrealistic beauty standards in magazines! I think there should be changes in the law for these influencers so that they have to declare when they’re doctoring their images. Sadly, I can’t see this issue going away otherwise.

Am I the only one just a little annoyed that she kept saying each influencer looked "a little different" instead of just calling it like it is? Let's face it. Those influencers looked bigger/thicker unedited. I think she was afraid it would sound like she was calling them fat, which is understandable, but still.

She should've also spoken about the fact that these influencers are surgically altered. That one of them had a rump that cannot be found in the wild. The truth is that when you see a person like that in public everyone stares bc the surgery is so obvious it looks botched. The proportions have gotten so absurd that these women look like cartoons. These surgeries you see influencers getting may not be popular everywhere but you see people like this occasionally in Miami, LA & Brazil

For the longest time, I thought I was the only person who had cellulite when I was 13 years old or so. That's when social media influencers weren't really in force and I was just consumed with celebrities in magazines and TV. Did you know I was ashamed of my body as a 13-year-old!!!! that I didn't wear SHORTS OR A SKIRT OR A DRESS FOR FOUR YEARS? I thought there was something so wrong with my body because how come my legs were never smooth. Now that I'm an adult, I realize cellulite is SO normal, especially among women. This isn't just starting with influencers or facetune but it's so scary how easy it is to perpetuate it now. Something that has been helping me lately is repeating the phrase: "The least interesting thing about you is how you look and how much you weigh." Make more of a life than just striving for clear skin and a tiny waist. Especially as women, we are so much more than that.

This is one of the reasons I don't go on social media anymore. I was tried of feeling like crap, getting upset almost every time I went on it because of many different things (unrealistic body goals, politics, religion, etc...) I have been so much happier since I stopped using Instagram and Facebook...and I was never on TikTok or Twitter lol but yeah. It does sucks though because of my business pages and whatnot, but my happiness is more important 🤷🏻‍♀️

False advertising has been going on since the beginning of time, the difference is now the people they used in commercials are now regular everyday people who have an “influence” that these advertisers can sell their stuff through and they choose to live their lives as walking “commercials” and we look at them thinking why don’t I look like that? I need to buy this product they are using so I can look like that when In Reality they don’t even look like that, so 🤷🏽‍♀️ don’t fall for the hype in the long run!

The biggest reason you'll never look like an influencer, you don't have money for all the plastic surgeries. It's so depressing to see their unfiltered selves because their implants and injections look rough up close. The extreme proportions are added to a skinny body, or sucked out of a thicker body. In the 90s, while a absolutely horrid, all you had to do was not eat to be praised.
