US Army Chinook Conducts Sling Load Operation on Humvee Air Assault Training First Person GoPro 4K

Captured this on my GoPro Hero 9 during Sling Load Operations, where we hook up 4 HMMWV (humvees) to then Air Assault out to the field to then conduct Field Training.

I did hundreds of these in the worst of weather and conditions back in the early 1990s. I even got trapped between the bottom of a chinook and the webbing over our trailer one time because the soldier hooking the HMMWV in the front was too timid. Thinking back just amazes me.

Yeah we had a whole new crew on it during the video, the one who got “hit” in the head by the tire in the beginning just finished OSUT 3 days ago, so i can understand it being a lot to take in 😂

I just remember that having 15 tons hovering over you was so surreal that it didn't seem dangerous at the time. I mean you "know" it was dangerous, but it lost all feeling of danger.

I think it was a familiarization course for individuals that put in a 4187 for Air Assault school. The hook people have 3ID on their helmets. 3ID is mechanized and really has no sling load capable vehicles that are front line combat. I served with STRIKE FORCE and IRON RAKKASANS after I was with the PHANTOM brigade 3ID in Desert Storm. That's right, last century. You can just call me Gruntpa.

They ain't RAKKASANS. Then again 3rd ID is mechanized so I don't know why they are sling loading shit. Maybe this was familiarization training for people that put in a 4187 for Air Assault school. I say this with the experience of being being in the Phantom brigade in Desert Storm and later serving with the IRON RAKKASANS.

Many units conduct air assault operations not just the 101st. That was an entire heavy weapons company and not familiarization for air assault school. You do not need to be air assault qualified to hook up sling loads, only air assault personnel verify loads before pickup.

@@FitOneTech like 10th mountain and 25th but they are light infantry not mechanized like 3rd. When I was 2nd ID in Korea the light battalions would conduct air assault operations but not the mech or armor. Maybe if they were loading fuel blivets I could understand. Either way way they need more training. Also using a Chinook for one humvee when it can carry two doesn't seem logistically efficient.

@@jasonreisenberger1285 so this battalion is actually light infantry that was part of 3ID. That’s why they were conducting air assault “missions”. We were air assaulting out to FTX. It was absolutely a “beginners” level execution as most of us have never done it before. Totally get you all are the experts 😂 but it was really good training for us to see how we can insert and get our weapons mounted quickly.
