I used to have a Kawasaki GT550 (G4) which had an automatic cancelling indicator system which cancelled after the machine had travelled 200Yds (180Mtrs) and then for a further 5 seconds. While this worked fine around town and at relatively low speeds, at motorway speeds of 70MPH (112 KPH) it would cancel far too soon for switching lanes and when exiting meaning you had to keep switching them back on sometimes as many as 4 or 5 times before manoeuvring. This system looks far more in tune to what is actually required so, thanks for highlighting it!

I had the same bike. Can't say I missed the self-cancelling feature when it failed. Great bike for performance but let down by very sub-standard electrics. I was forever replacing failed igniter coils (and aftermarket parts lasted no longer than the expensive Kawa OEM).

Thanks for that review Andy. The only bike I've had with self-cancellers was my RD350 YPVS that I bought brand new in 86. It was time-based but worked fairly well. I've been obsessed with this since some stupid bint pulled out on me when I was 16 years old (a long time ago lol) on my Yamaha FS1E DX (the variant with the disk brake up front to pull up the awesome power that the 49cc engine delivered LMAO). In fact I think I've just had a bit of a revelation here, just by writing this now. Worrying about the state of my indicators over the past 35-6 years, it has spoiled to some not inconsiderable extent the experience of each ride (I only ride for pleasure), constantly checking that I hadn't left my indicators on, then re-checking a few seconds later (must be late-onset CDO (OCD but in alphabetic order)). I'm going to give this one a go. Thanks very much for the review.

Over the years, I’ve conditioned myself, by leaving my thumb on the button. It’s inexcusable not to have S. C. Signals, considering over half of all fatal m/c collisions with 4 wheelers, happen at intersections, where they turn in front of a bike. Some older HD’s, had a momentary push button on each side. Foolproof!

My 75 honda cb-550f has a rather loud beeper(stock) to tell you your signal is on.Seemed like a good idea, so I bought several self-excited piezo buzzers for my sv-650 and zrx....unless I`m going over the speed limit I can hear them and the price was dirt cheap.You just need to find to find the flasher relay..Gooday!!!

My F800GS technically has them but they’re way to slow to be practical even at motorway speeds (mind you I‘m in Germany so its ~160km/h) it takes 7-8 seconds to cover the distance to cancel and if you don’t cover the distance it takes 10 seconds which is way too long in any situation.

@wfdTamar3 жыл бұрын
No, because it needs 3 wires, the indicator left & right and also the indicator 'feed' (or power) wire which is in the switch (it also needs an earth & ignition switched 12 v power). You might get access to those 3 wires anywhere between indicator switch and maybe under the tank or inside the headlight.

Thanks Andy your video will be most useful to me. However, my first problem is that my 2 block connectors are situated within the headlight shell and there's unlikely to be room for the extra cables. So my question is: how would you do the splicing? FYI I have the UK equivalent of the Yamaha v star 950 cruiser. On another matter, I play the guitar and I really like your backing track. Do you know the title and artist. Cheers Paul

With the plethora of sensors so many bikes have this day? Not to mention fricken ECUs! There is like ZERO excuse for so many motorcyles to LACK self canceling indicators! My KTM has sensors for lean and wheel speed....WHY do I have to remember to turn off signals??? Which btw I dont seem capable of....grrrr just FROSTS me! AT LEAST put a damn 2 minute time out if nothing else!!! LOL....Ya KNOW? Is THAT really so much to ask?? I think NOT! And WHY are there not cheap generic turn signal relays that HAVE THIS??? ...OR....OR if everyone is too fricken AFRAID of liability to do THAT? Then WHY at LEAST not have something AUDIBLE to remind a rider??? It could even honk your horn after one minute? Just a very brief horn blip of the horn....but even more than that whining WHY with ALL the other frivolous regulations of governmental motorcycle requirement dont they FRICKEN simply INSIST manufactures provide this??? I mean they are so pissy about kickstand switches and such....makes no sense to ignore this VERY REAL safety issue!

Must use g-force to sense you going around the corner then straighten up to cancel, how does it go when you do things like moving moving off from the side of the road without turning a corner?
@ANDY56 жыл бұрын
It won’t auto cancel with subtle movements like that however it will still time out after about 20 seconds if the bike is moving

Hi Andy, curious about your bikes front and rear suspension and how its holding up. I have rear shocks that look just like yours but I dont think i have them adjusted correctly. Did you add and gas to them? Also how does the stock front suspension hold up in your opinion? Thanks again for the great videos.
@ANDY57 жыл бұрын
G'day Tom, the rear shocks on mine are JBS, purchased on eBay. I haven't touched the gas pressure but did adjust the spring pre-load, and they are pretty bloody good considering the price. As for the front they are holding up well. I would never say they're great but the XS11 was never renowned for it's handling. I rode the thing 3,800 klms to the National XS1100 Rally and back and Mal Pittman took it for a spin. He was impressed with how well it handled, so I'm calling that a win. Check out what he had to say here kzbin.info/www/bejne/movcc5qFdrysfrc

G'day from Melb, STS keep sending me emails re the self-cancelling indicators but I'm not convinced... are you still using it and how has it been? I also had an XS1100 back in the day and found the handling terrible, used to scare the shit out of me so I traded it in for an FJ1200 which used to scare the shit out of my pillion passengers when their feet went airborne of the rear pegs at speeds above 140mph. Yeah, I was a total idiot back then... now I just putter about on a CBR300R which is giving me about 75mpg (UK gallons) or 3.77l/100km... that does me nicely.
@ANDY54 жыл бұрын
No I’m not still using it. It functions great but my cheap Chinese rip off Z1 switches didn’t like the rubber momentary conversion inserts. That meant I had to switch on and off at each turn and it seemed kind off pointless. I may change to a Motogadget switch one day but for now I just do it the old fashioned way.
@StarFyre4 жыл бұрын
@@ANDY5 Thanks for the reply Andy, my switch gear is already momentary but as it centres itself and you have to push it in to cancel I don't think it will work even STS said it was fully compatible with my bike. Any thoughts on this?
@wfdTamar3 жыл бұрын
@@StarFyre It should work. That's how my Royal Enfield Interceptor 650 works. In stock form there's one finger action to initiate indication and another to stop it. What the STS does is take over the latter job. In stock form the switch contact would stay to one side until you cancel - which centres the contact. With the STS the foam pads push the switch contact back to the centre as soon as you let go of the switch, but the STS continues the indicating until bike movement, or time cancel it.
@Questioneverythingg7307 жыл бұрын
Great bit of kit 👍. When I operate my indicators I need to press the switch after the manoeuvre to cancel the signal. The switch 'clicks' and feels like a mechanical mechanism to stop/ reset the signal. Do you think this would be an issue for the install? Keep up the great work
@ANDY57 жыл бұрын
G'day Garry, thanks for tuning in. The XS1100 also has "press to cancel" switches, it's just that I have fitted Z1 Kawasaki units to mine. It should not be an issue, but if in doubt just go to the website and ask the question. They are very good at providing support if required, Andy

As long as you love it who cares what he thinks. Tell him that the XS11 was a milestone bike for many reasons. Yamaha wanted to make a statement with the XS1100. The design criteria included briefs such as an engine life cycle of 60 years, had to carry more than a Goldwing and had to be fast. When it was released in Africa in 1978 it was the largest capacity bike and the fastest production bike in the world. It was Yamaha's first ever in-line four cylinder four stroke and it had the first TCI ignition, co-developed with Toyota. On release it ran 1/4 mile times of 11.78 sec at 114.21 mph and was the only production bike to consistently run sub 12 second quarter miles. It had the best brakes of any of it's pears. At the end of the day if he is a dyed in the wool Harley man he won't know any better and all we can do is take pity on him and wish him well. It has been stated that 97% of all Harley's ever made are still on the road...the other 3% made it home :) Thanks for tuning in, Andy
