After mulling over a few options to help lower the gearing on my road bike to help me up the climbs I decided to go for replacing the cassette with massive 11-40. This vlog is basically a "How to" explaining what is needed for a big cassette to work properly, the tools required and most importantly the cost.

Very interesting tutorial, Nige. I'd like to do the very same modification. Can you please give me more details about the cassette: which model? I find a lot of Sunrace 11-40 9v, but they all seem to be for MTB, so I'm not sure I can identify the right one. Also the road link: which brand/model/size? Thank you in advance

The one I used was part of a kit that I got off Ebay. Came with all 3 parts. I think I left a link in the description! 👍😊🚴‍♂️

@@FreshAyers Hi Nige, finally I did the modification with the same new components as yours. Everything seems to work very good, except for strange, irregular micro-clicks that I can feel under my feet, when I push hard on the pedals (for example climbing a hill). Do you have any idea of the reasons?

I did 11-42 on my sora wolf face link and then my cable snapped on rear derailleur gave up in the end lol and went back to 11-32
@WheelersAtLarge
@WheelersAtLarge 3 жыл бұрын
That's unlucky... The Sora and Tiagra GS rear mech are rated for 34t but in my experience will cope just fine with 36 without a road link, so that might be an option for you.

Nige did you find having that bail out 40 cog made the soul sapping climbs manageable ? Climbs at 10%+ are imo such a miserable experience, still do them, but it hurts

I wish I'd done it years ago! It is an affordable conversation to lower the gearing without expensive chainset replacement. Made a world of difference to me living where I do in Derbyshire, its all bloomin hills! ☺️🚴👍

Great video! I'm planning to do the same but I'm kind of hesitant that the Sora RD will break after a while since it's only designed for a 34 teeth cog. I guess that is the goat link is for? Do you still have this set up until now? Is it still working for you? Thank you in advance. I have the same bike as yours. Thanks
@FreshAyers
@FreshAyers Жыл бұрын
Thanks Joel. Yeah still got the same setup. You are right without the goat link it would not even work. I find the setup works well for me and do not plan changing anytime soon!...atb Nige 😊🚴‍♀️👍

Hi! I wonder how are the breaks on rc500 working? I want to buy my first road bike and need to choose between rc500 and rc5200 which has hybrid brakes.

I haven't found a problem with them. Obviously they are not a efficient as hydraulics but I find them fine for my style of riding 😉

Triban says it’s maximum 36mm for tires but if you buy hutchinson tires from decathlon (triban’s store) you can take 38 and 40mm it’s goes well on triban rc500 and 520. I will buy in few days i need to go offroad with this dreambike
