I'd just like to applaud Anne for being confident enough to showcase her fitting at such a young age, as is the case with a lot of these fittings. I know when I was a young dancer I would've been hesitant to have the dance world see an in depth analysis of my feet/body (outside of a performance). I love these videos because you can tell Josephine takes such good care with the dancers and making sure they feel comfortable. Another great video :)

Whats interesting is that I got my pointe shoes a year BEFORE my demi pointes! As well as that, we use demipointe shoes instead of flat now. We don't use our flat shoes anymore. We don't go up onto pointe on them AT ALL, and we just dance on them as we would flat shoes in center/barre
@anneharrison18492 жыл бұрын
I had a similar experience, started pointe work, but got demi pointe shoes for syllabus work - the main thing I found is how it affects adage is the centre, it was a lot more wobbly!
@gnguyen4112 жыл бұрын
It might be just pointework at the barre, than the demi-pointe shoe was use to work stability at the center. It might be just pointe at the barre, than demi-pointe at the center to get used to dancing at the center in pointe shoes. The pointe shoes would feel different than ballet slippers, and you would have to make sure your core or stability muscles are strong. - That's my opinion. You're teacher might have a different explanation.
@IATEALLTHECHEESE2 жыл бұрын
@@gnguyen411 we do dance en pointe a little - it's in our exams. I'm going to be Adv found (RAD) in about two months. This year we're doing a lot of work in retire in the centre, as well as more complicated combos of last year's releves and echappes. After our next exam we start doing turns and pirouettes en pointe. But yeah, we just use demis as our ballet slippers/flats now haha. Once we get to ADVF, ADV1, & ADV2 a lot of, if not most of our dancing is en pointe, especially the last two.

Anyone can put on a pair of demi pointe shoes, but don't go on pointe! Not even at the barre. I know Josephine knows her stuff, but I don't think many ballet teachers are using them for pointe exercises at the barre. The ones I had didn't even have a particularly flat end compared to point shoes, it was a hardened end and a thicker sole.

Having a 9 year old on pointe has nothing to do with how muscular their feet are to validate that it’s ok. It’s bad for a 9 year old, no matter how good or strong they are, to be on pointe because their growth plates are not closed. The foot damage caused by prematurely putting a young dancer in pointe shoes is irreversible. As adult teachers (or fitters) WE are responsible for making appropriate decisions that are in their best interest and for their future as dancers.

Couldn't there be a way to make a perfect pointe shoe without having to do the "destruction/breaking in"?. I know the purpose of that is about making it fit for each person because everyone has very unique feet. Which makes sense for what it is used for. But. What if someone made like a mold of the foot and then made it literally to form kn to that mold for that dancer? Obviously cost is a element to this but could it work? Or does it exist?
@anneharrison18492 жыл бұрын
Considering the price of custom shoes that professionals use, I suspect making a mold of the foot and then turning it into a last to build the shoes on would be cost prohibitive! I suspect there are a lot of pros who would like this. Breaking in wouldn't change as different roles require different qualities within the well fitting shoe. I know some dancers can pretty much pick up their shoes, do a few exercises at the bar and go on stage.
@Author.Noelle.Alexandria2 жыл бұрын
@@anneharrison1849 Even pros RARELY have lasts built like this. The cost is EXHORBITANT.
@Author.Noelle.Alexandria2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn’t world. Different roles mean different methods. I own tons and tons of stage-worn shoes from the same dancers, and when you catch them enough, and then get those shoes, you start to see consistencies in how they break their shoes. One dancer I know cuts her shanks when she’ll be doing a lot of allegro, but keep them whole and less broken in when doing adagio.

Odd, I think demi pointe shoes are more common in England than the US. Freed make them and they're pretty expensive. Sansha also makes them and they're pretty affordable, especially if you catch a sale. I think they use Demi pointe shoes to help train the feet and toes because you can't "cheat" and spread out your toes to help balance. Plus your foot needs to get used to the thicker and narrower fit of a real pointe shoe.

Make sure her growth plates are closed (her doctor can tell you) before she goes on pointe! Usually children shouldn't start on pointe before 11-12yrs because their growth plates aren't fully fused before then, and dancing on pointe before this happens can lead to improper growth and injury.
@kaeliekwah50732 жыл бұрын
@@co_co_chantal I do feel worried. Good thing is that she won't be dancing on pointe just yet at least til end of the year. But thanks for your comment. I will consult a doctor to help check on this.

Don’t do it! Growth plates in girls don’t typically close until 12-13 or as late as 15. Don’t rush it…she’s have a longer dance life with fewer issues with her feet. Weird question because you seem to know a lot about foot pedagogy. Did you learn all of this from dancing? Did you need to take anatomy classes? Your knowledge base seems almost medical in nature.
@jamielaw47492 жыл бұрын
(I'm not Josephine, commenting for fun!) Not all dancers are as knowledgeable of course, a lot of dancers do learn about feet anatomy. We pick up different things from our physio therapists and other dancers, and our teachers too. We have to know a lot about feet to ensure we're using our muscles correctly and train to become stronger rather than weaker. E.g., the way you pointe your feet can affect the ability to balance on pointe, or even cause injury!

Demi-pointe shoes aren’t pointe shoes, and advertising them as such is extremely disappointing, as is an apparent lack of understanding of bone ossification. Until the bones have begun to ossify, pointed shouldn’t be started. The substantially increased risk of career-ending injury isn’t worth the clout of trying to push kids to pointe younger and younger. This is just sad, and I’ve lost a lot of respect for you. There is no detriment to holding off on pointe until ossification has begun, but a lot of detriment in pushing it. Not to mention, demi-pointe shoes are NOT pointe shoes. That’s why they’re called demi-pointe shoes.
