Funfact: D and TH (the "th" sound in "the" in English) in Germanic languages come from the same old letter "eth", uppercase Ð, lowercase ð. However, there is a very similar "th" sound (as in the word "thick") which comes from the old Germanic letter "thorn", uppcase Þ, lowercase þ. Due to the sounds being very similar, and possibly people modifying their languages over time (those who stayed in the area that is now Germany and those who went to the British Isles), they are almost interchangable, so words that are supposed to have "eth" instead have "thorn". So, which is why the German word "danke" is different from the English word "thank". What if you say "thanke", suddenly it's very similar to thank, and what if you say "dank"? You get the gist. Just thinking this way, you'll quickly notice that you can understand way more German and Scandinavian than you think, simply because they have so many words that are almost exactly the same, just pronounced differently.
