Thanks for posting; the professor Daniel Bonevac is brilliant and perhaps a good title for this reflection's caption on the work of F. Scott Fitzgerald was, is and shall be: 'The value and power of introspection'.

Not that the river is constantly changing, but the person who steps in the river is changing as well. The mere experience of stepping into the river changes you. I believe this is the true meaning of Tha Pantha Rhei.

Just a question. When they name The Lost Generation, to this particular group of artist its because, they were The lost generation in the sense of they did not explored their talent and vision as much as they needed. Or it was The Lost Generation in the sense of lost as in a Labyrinth.? If it is the second which I believe it is, i thinks it goes well with the spirt of their times, and maybe out times when we are lost, we have no one to follow, the values have failed, and man is by it self in a very hostil universe, We are also the Lost generation, 100 years later.

I loved the baseball story at 21 min. Philosophy vs Business. If the Physicists were playing, they might have argues, "No fair, you changed the outcome by observing it !" And an Empiricist would say, " Can I prove the ball was ever hit at all?" There is a Monty Python skit about German and Greek Philosophers Playing Soccer, arguing over a goal shot. This made me think of that. see: And now for something completely different.

Isn't Ben Franklin a role Model?

I can't help but think of Philosophy in Political terms first. There is the human condition: ignorance, sickness, conflict and death - The economic needs. But, what we really need to fight to get organized is the two fold curses of Tyranny and Anarchy. In most thinkers, I've found that Education is a panacea that cures the ills society. Then, we will have the collective resources to fight the ills of Nature. I'm a Utilitarian at heart, I guess. It's easy to despair if you don't know the why the rules are there. And, most people don't. This is right out of Aristotle when he hate the Specialists for having too narrow an understanding of the world and tells people they need to be liberal artists to be good citizens. There are systems that work ! But, Like in Brave New World, the leaders want people to be distracted from Power by keeping them comfortable. SOMA. Is it not genuine to live in a culture that puts economy before Humanity? Don't we live in a tyranny like that NOW! I don't mean to sound hopeless. If the Guardians have power by necessity then what kind of guardians will we have? Brutes and Brats make poor Legislators.

I've studied the Humanities a lot. My point is there is nothing new in the humanities, the Questions and answers are already there. you just have to separate the wheat from the chaff. If ants and grass never give up, why do we? We have so any choices as what to be. When you're 5 you might want to be a fireman. When you're in college you sweat what to study (and you often begrudge doing it) and you don't even know if that's what you'll wind up doing. Learn as you go. Then, if the culture is a racket (if I get a job that claims the total rights to all my work and research that I am left with nothing) what good is talent? (Capitalist Pigs) Still, if living well is the best revenge (in a world devoid on nominative values) there is a goal ! If only a society of paid workers can create an economy (see: the theory of the virtuous spiral) then, it is to the advantage of all sectors to watch and regulate each other for the greater good. Look at Warren Buffet. He owns a holding company of several kinds of Businesses. If one preys upon the other, it will be a zero gain. If his Oil concerns get in the way of the efficiency of his other stuff, it doesn't help. If the slave labor in China and economic erosion only ruins the Middle class and avoids Quality controls for the sake of a cheap T-shirt, where does that leave our economy? There's something worth fighting for, even if you have to call it Balance. (Sorry for the rants. I Love you work.)

The culture of the Military is built on order and necessity. Everyone else shit rigs a culture for themselves. "It's a way of life!" There must be kind of system of do's and don'ts (see: Stoicism) to build up from inherent in existing. The Hindus have a set of spiritual goals in Love. Duty, Wealth, and Liberation (from an unhealthy attachment to things). (I Hate all radical Ascetics) Well, there's more than one way to skin a cat. But, to say there is No way and no basis for rules is demonstrably ridiculous. If existential alienation is a sense of powerlessness, read Nietzsche!
