I know that my step-father (ww2 veteran) had no interest in watching a John Wayne film, and it was because John Wayne avoided Military Service during WW2 when most able body Men served and did their part in the War Effort.
@TWS-pd5dcАй бұрын
Wrong again. Wayne did not "avoid" military service. Do some research. He was 34, married and was the sole support of his wife and 4 children. Therefore like thousands of other men he received a deferment. That's not avoiding the draft. He also volunteered for the OSS but for unclear reasons his application was not received. And please don't do the usual BS in saying "Clark Gable and Jimmy Stewart were the same age as Wayne and they went into the service!". Neither Gable nor Stewart in 1942 were even married, much less supporting even 1 child. Apples to oranges.

Richard Widmark & John Wayne probably should be #1. Back in the day, their distaste for each other was widely publicized.
@TWS-pd5dcАй бұрын
Not true. They clashed over creative differences when Wayne was directing The Alamo. Widmark felt Wayne wanted him to play Bowie the way Wayne would play him and Widmark understandably disagreed. But Widmark said their "feud" was exaggerated and they got through it and even had a few laughs later in the filming. This was confirmed by Laurence Harvey, who got along with both actors and was present during their clashes.
@c.d.macaulay662 ай бұрын
Last time I checked, Hackman has two Oscars to Wayne's one. Great as he was, John Wayne always played himself. That's OK. That's how the big studios marketed their stars back then and also what audiences wanted and expected to see. But Gene could act rings around the Duke.
@TWS-pd5dc2 ай бұрын
You're wrong there. Wayne hardly played himself in Red River or The Searchers. Even In Harm's Way he showed a vulnerable side that he often didn't show. Wayne believed the public went to see him play the usual tough, moral, righteous "good guy". Based on box office results from about 1959 to 1972 I'd say he was correct. That said, generally he always had a top star to play opposite him, to give balance to the movie. Henry Fonda, Kirk Douglas, Jimmy Stewart, Robert Mitchum, William Holden, Lee Marvin, Dean Martin among many others all co-starred with him on screen. While these were arguably better actors, if you watch Wayne act opposite them rarely will they dominate the scene. Kirk Douglas admitted that. Wayne would often gripe that his co-stars always got the more nuanced roles, which was true. But watch as an example Fort Apache. Fonda has the much better role but in their many scenes together Wayne more than holds his own with Henry. The story about Hackman was told by Wayne's daughter. Not sure if Wayne had lived to see Hackman's career that he would have felt that way. Wayne always respected good actors, even if he didn't agree with their politics. But Wayne was a very good actor albeit limited in his characterizations.

Wayne was a coward, pure and simple. Others, of similar age were only too eager and willing to go to war, but not Wayne. In fact when he visited a marine base to 'entertain' the troops, he was booed off stage. After the war, many of his contemporaries refused to act with him, because of his actions. The fact that Wayne portrayed himself as a patriot and war hero (in his movies) is despicable. It was well known A) had he enlisted, when he returned to acting he would have remained a lower grade 'B' gradecactor. B) the only reason he became an 'A' list actor was because the real 'A' list actors were offering their services to their country. But now, generate a list of actors, directors and producers that couldn't stand him or his attitude.

Very few did. I know Wayne's politics offend some snowflakes but the facts are these: He worked with conservatives like Dean Martin, Jimmy Stewart, Maureen O'Hara, Robert Mitchum, James Caan, Robert Duval. And liberals like Henry Fonda, Kirk Douglas, Lauren Bacall, Geraldine Page, Anthony Quinn, Kate Hepburn, Angie Dickinson. All spoke well of him, admired his professionalism and said he was respectful. And don't believe that nonsense about "6 security guards had to hold Wayne back from pulling Satcheen Littlefeather" off the stage. First of all, she was not Native American, she was Mexican American per her family. Second, Wayne in 1973 was in his late 60's so I highly doubt 6 security men had to hold him back. And finally that event was in all the papers, Brando refusing his Oscar. No mention of Wayne trying to rush the stage, etc. Don't you think that juicy of a story would have been reported back then? Made up BS.

@@mickyw1455 You are absolutely correct! Good actors can be mis-cast! There are plenty of examples of it. It is very important to keep an actor's abilities in mind during the casting process, esp. in historic dramas. Gene was wonderful in Bonnie and Clyde, but he was cast as an American. Portraying a foreign personality is beyond the scope of many good actors. I do believe that is why some actors choose to turn down certain roles. It can be a negative blow to their careers, as fans tend to have long memories! LOL!

I remember when John Wayne's movie "The Green Berets" came out that same year as the TET Offensive; mothers across America finally said hell no, I'm not sending my child off to die in some God- forsaken jungle country I know nothing about- this of course referred to the scene where a doomed Beret was snatched up by a foot snare and graphically impaled on a punji stake panel. Wayne never could recover from this cinematic tribute to the American soldier that absolutely had the reverse effect of seeming to be endorsing the war, thus arousing public indignation and opposition. Do some research, rather than a stupid KZbin video. I've read a few books on Wayne and he was liked and respected by almost all of his peers and many of those peers did not share Wayne's right wing political views either. Kirk Douglas and Henry Fonda were big liberals. So was Kate Hepburn and Lauren Bacall. Anthony Quinn and Lee Marvin were democrats, as was Angie Dickinson and Geraldine Page. They all spoke well of Wayne and Fonda visited Wayne in the hospital and refused to leave until he could see him when Wayne was nearing the end. The only actors who went on record as not liking Wayne were Ed Asner (no shock, he was an intolerant liberal), Monty Clift (just a totally different personality) and Tab Hunter, who wrote in his autobiography that Wayne's "macho" persona eventually got on his nerves. Even Richard Widmark, a big liberal who clashed with Wayne over creative differences on the set of The Alamo, said "we had some problems, but we moved on with making the picture professionally and even had a few laughs." Oh, and Rock Hudson said Wayne was great to him on the set of The Undefeated. Bear in mind, Rock and Wayne shared the same political views too. Wayne was well aware of Hudson being gay and while he couldn't understand "how such a handsome guy could not like women" he also spoke very highly of Rock. Wayne was much too professional to let any personal preferences affect his working relationships.
