Dear Daniel: These five-banded barbs (Desmopuntius pentazona johorensis), appear to be doing very well for you in your, community tank. I'd love to see if they can be successfully bred in a species tank. Since it is an egg scattering species, I believe they could be bred in a similar manner to the way I'm breeding Columbian tetra (Hyphessobrycon columbianus). My water is much too hard and alkaline for them, however. Thank you for posting your, interesting and informative video on this, lovely species. All my best, Sincerely, E. J. Brinegar

It's funny how Rummy Nose Tetra is schooling / schoaling with them :D
@DanielKeepingFish3 жыл бұрын
I know right? Rummies are amazing schoolers so it is their instinct. I guess with none others around it decided to join a group of fish with similar behaviour and that are no threat.

This is one of the best species profiles that I have ever seen! The only problem that I have with it is now I am going to build a new 40 gal. around a school of 11 of these. ALL YOUR FAULT! 😤

@@DanielKeepingFishwould you keep them with pearl gourami?
@DanielKeepingFish Жыл бұрын
@enxcrypted18 yeah I'd give it a go. The Gourami will tend to use the top of the tank more where as these will use the mid and bottom levels. I don't see them bothering the Gourami and they're quick enough to get out of the Gouramis' way so I figure it would work.

@enxcrypted18 no worries. Thing is each fish has it's own personality same as we do hey. I can't say 100% it'll be fine but on balance I'd judge it should be fine. They're great fish, you'll enjoy them.

Nicely done. Daniel, any tips on breeding? I'm thinking of moving a few of my school into a 25 with floating water sprite and then removing the parents back to their school after they lay. But I've never bred a scattering species.

Hi. just wondering what substrate you like to use? I'm thinking of using Eco Complete.
@DanielKeepingFish4 жыл бұрын
So I use a thin layer of Tropica clay based substrate then gravel. It's small rounded gravel in different colours mixed up I used for this tank. I try to keep to a reasonable budget so anyone can set up tanks the same as I do. I haven't used Eco Complete myself but I understand it is very good. Folk who use it tend to speak highly of it.
@1domcouk4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Daniel. Will now check out gravel with Tropica clay.

Was just wondering how fast do five banded barbs grow
@DanielKeepingFish4 жыл бұрын
I'm not certain of that bud. I keep them with other fish and since they exhibit no parental responsibilities the eggs they scatter get eaten pretty quickly. You would need to set up a separate tank to breed them which I haven't done at this point.
@trigerhappy19804 жыл бұрын
@@DanielKeepingFish I didn't mean fry, I have just got five banded barbs and they are really small just wondering how long they take to get fully grown
@DanielKeepingFish4 жыл бұрын
@@trigerhappy1980 oh right. Well if you got them at a smaller size they are generally sold at in stores then I'd say you only have approximately two or three months to go then.

Can you believe I have never kept Barbs...YET
@DanielKeepingFish5 жыл бұрын
Haha, so many fish to keep... They get a bad rap sometimes. I even read online that you can't keep these with the likes of Angelfish because they nip at their fins but that is certainly not my experience. There are semi-aggressive varieties like the Tigers but most Barbs I find to be vary peaceful and good community fish.
@-8_8-4 жыл бұрын
Fancy seeing you here. I keep a dozen of these with my crystal red tail platys. At very stable slightly higher pH.

Can they be kept with corydoras? Just wondered if they'd out-compete them for food.
@DanielKeepingFish3 жыл бұрын
Yes you can keep them with Cories. They can be quick to food but enough should make it to the bottom for the Cories especially if you offer a mix of floating and sinking foods. I tend to drop food to both ends of the tank to ensure it gets spaced out and all the fish get some.

Can they be kept with livebearers, guppies and such..?
@DanielKeepingFish2 жыл бұрын

I have a single female krib, she had a mate but she murdered him, so I am just going to just keep her by herself. Does she bother the barbs at all? Right now mine is in with a school of red eyes, a molly, clown pleco, and she pays no one any mind. I wanted to add a small school of these or cherry barbs to fill up the middle to lower half of my 40 gallon planted breeder tank
@DanielKeepingFish3 жыл бұрын
I find generally they bother any other fish unless they're in breed mode which'll most likely not happen if she doesn't have a mate.
